Backup home-based work plan

Post by hobo »

My job's an artist. Times are VERY tough in this line of work! I will continue but I need to diversify from simply making pics to exhibit. Currently exploring community arts opportunities, making small stuff - such as handmade greetings cards, candles and soap. I've also taken on some web design work and supplying art for CD covers. Additionally, I have a stall at a tabletop sale every Sunday morning. Oh, and I'm also planning to grow lots more this year, so selling seedlings could be an option, I reckon.

Do you have a backup plan in case your job goes (if it hasn't already!) or an idea of how you could earn money if/when the economy goes 'POP'?

Luckily my role suits consulting. Having a permanent job is good but if it went away I would go contracting.

I write articles for a website, and I also get paid to post on some US-based forums. Doesn't bring in mega-bucks but it's extra income.

That's my biggest worry and still haven't got any solution...

Ummm, not sure to be honest. OH could make furniture etc out of wood subject to be able to buy materials. I don't mind doing anything and have had many different jobs in the past, childcare being a home based one. I might consider making meals for the elderly if I could access a suitable kitchen/unit.

I would be out with the rifles and other kit getting small game to sell to anyone who had the cash, we have butchers shops that buy in locally shot rabbits etc.

The biggest problem that will be faced is that if it is due to financial restraints or similar then if no one has the money to buy anything much more than food then they are unlikely to be spending on other things.

It is finding what people will need rather than want, and that they can afford and cost the supplier of such things as little as possible to do.

KP & Itsy, so what if the economy fell to bits big time?

Gnoley, good point about no cash and needs & wants. Down to bartering for what you need it'll be then. Folks would want soap and candles. A lot of stuff I sell at the Tabletops are outdoors/prepper items but my stock is finite. So, I need to invest in more stock, wax and soap ingredients....and somewhere to store it! And better get that other greenhouse up on the allotment for bringing on seedlings - and more outlets for everything!

More thinking needed!

Not a clue, TBH. Are you talking about a situation where nobody has any work?

That would have to be a major EOTWAWKI, surely? I dunno if I could see that happening...
