I don't see that I could defend against petrol bombs or someone using a JCB

Looking at footage of the London riots I'd hope that I'm never in the scenario of trying to defend against a mob. BO & Living off the land isn't a feasible solution

Maybe I need to get started on a DIY ballista  dont know if the wife or neighbours would be terribly chuffed. Covered pits with stakes would slow an assault but ultimately would fail because people aren't that stupid

I guess the most likely scenario is a flu epidemic in the UK & that a large chunk of population would be gone lessening initial competition for resources.

Only those in hidden locations would do well but not necessarily in the long term. Banded together groups would provide strength in numbers but would need feeding.

My current situation would be untenable but a move at present isn't possible, its a cause for anxiety

How about rigging your own water sprinkler system using garden hose with irrigation nozzles. 3/4 in Ply boards made to fit inside your windows will deflect missiles and fire bombs and with the hoses anything on fire can be extinguished.

I'm a bit of a believer that the best form of defense is a good offence, i think we will have roaming gangs and local militias, its a bit of a double edge sword for me really i need to be in a place that i can defend with my community and be able to leave should the need arise but also be in a place with an area that we can control and don't get me wrong im not talking about running the local town but i mean being able to dominate our immediate area of operations and address any threat should the need arise, we saw during the riots that everyday people will descend into "pack mentality". I think being inconspicuous will help one there was a point made in reference to a well stocked bloomed garden being seen will just attracted the nasty,m so location location location is the key.

I live on the outskirts of a town that has a populas of around 100K i expect that within 7 days 15-25% will be wiped out in the initial violence-(Time to hide)-The shops will be bare, petrol stations will be dry and all over the use able weapons will be in the hands of the bad people.-(Time to get the family round and hunker down and weather the storm)
7-14 days the local emergency services will be disbanded, gone, wiped out or plane on the bad team, another 15% maybe gone too.
14-30days by now people will be establish as either Nomadic or settler/bug in or bug out. Those requiring prescriptions will be brown bread, any serious injury's or illness with no A&E and hospital will result in death at a guess 50% of my local population will be gone. Also by now the power will be out too, starvation and dehydration will be massive factors. ETC ETC.

Hopefully you get my point that the worst will be the first few months once this initial period is over life will become easier.

Coulsey, there is no way anybody can put a timescale on stuff like this.Because it has never happened before -nobody knows! People will adapt and surprise you in extreme times, and you vastly under estimate the human will to survive. Don't put glib figures on death and ruin and destruction pet - this is not a film!

Our main purpose in Forting Up is to avoid completely if possible the first few chaotic weeks of any breakdown.

"Yea be thee like unto the mouse that hideth in the hedgerow. She doth not shake her cheezy bits at cats, nor doth she squeak 'come and try if thou thinkest tho art hard enough' to the angry shrew. But she travelleth her way in silence"

it will take your average "eastender,Xfactor, Big Brother" fan a couple of months to even realise there IS a problem, much less do anything about it.
