Historical re-enactment and skills

Post by smileyt »

Not sure if this is in the right place but I have been browsing historical re-enactment sites and the websites of traders that supply these groups. I've found a few interesting links:

http://www.todsstuff.co.uk/tods-school/ ... -3-day.htm
http://moas.atlantia.sca.org/wsnlinks/

The last one looks a bit airy-fairy but there seems to be some good stuff hidden away in there.

I was wondering - what skills do you think we would need if we had to start from scratch? I know this isn't likely to happen because there'll be so much modern stuff lying around for decades after any SHTF moment that a lot of what would be needed would probably be around. I know gardening would be one of them. But what else? Weaving? Making your own arrows  ?

Cobbler (fixing shoes), ability to handle horses (and knowledge of ploughing).

Sewing would be good, gardening essential, brewing, soap making, anything that you can use yourself or trade. The list is endless!

I think it's absolutely essential to know stuff like this, is bound to come in handy whether TSHTF or not. Plus it's interesting and great fun to learn. TY smiley

Distilling must be pretty high on the agenda. Alcohol kills germs, can be used to preserve foods and can provide heat for cooking, space heating and water heating.

Other things that we will need to learn is how to deal with human waste.

In the past it was either long drop and move when full or they often had a couple of cess pits that would fill up one year at a time each, left to dry out/compost and dug into the garden.
