My GF sent me this link offering free cavity&loft insulation. I am always on guard when something is offered for FREE but after entering my details a couple of day ago i received a call tonight. A firm was instructed to call me and arranged to come down on March the 15th (through EDF).
The guy on the phone explained how the Gov is funding the scheme and both cavity and loft insulation is 100% FREE. I also told the guy that i owned the house but rent it out through the council, this was still fine. He also said how with the improved energy rating for my property it would remain a first choice when letting !
So all i can say is check this out as it might be of use to some of you
we had the wall insulation done a few years back and yes it was free
i have to say it works really well and worth having done
only down side is that they drill lots of little holes on the outside of the house, which needed painting over
I insulated the inside walls of my solid wall house (only the easier "plain" ones - not too many features to move or work around). Made a big difference to condensation and room warmth.
4ft by 8foot boards are approx £25 - 75mm of foam with 12mm of plaster board bonded to it. Adhesives, joint tape and joint filler add maybe £5 per board. Can be done by a competent DIYer - just needs a lick of paint after.
Not as good as free, but worth it from my point of view
Been thinking about doing that myself. My walls are poured concrete, and seem to have plasterboard inside. I'm not sure whether I should take the plasterboard off and replace with the insulation or just shove them on top.

Good if you have the room to do it, if I took 4" off the inside of the house it would make for smaller rooms, front to back is only about 19ft, and we also have the problem of windows and/or doors
We had this done last year through a scheme which cost £50 - it really has made a difference. I too was skeptical, it seems the government has forced the big energy providers to fund this. But it makes me wonder what 'they' know - the last couple of winters have been very cold and we are told non-stop about global warming..... I do think it will make things much more comfortable should gas or electricity be down for any length of time. I think there is some sort of limit to the number of houses per area so Google something like 'insulation grant [your town]' ASAP.
If everyone in the UK insulated their houses properly we would not have to build power stations so quickly so the cost will fall on future governments.
It is cheaper to give free insulation to everyone than build new power stations, the cost per household is much less.
There was a scheme, about ten years ago, to use prison and community order labour to install free insulation into every home in the UK. Until someone realised that the publicity of the possible outcome of letting burglars and housebreakers into peoples homes under poor supervision might just ruin a minister's career. The scheme was canned.
Well, if you only get wall insualtion due to already having loft insualtion the installers don't need to enter your house - it's all holes drilled from the outside. Noisy and a bit dusty but it only takes an hour or so (unless you own a mansion).
