Planted up some seeds in a propagtor: radish, leek, onions, carrots and some chillies. My first attempt at growing veg apart from spuds in sacks so I'm not expecting miracles ! I f I get any sort of success I'll be making a proper veg plot later and might think more seriously of moving out of the city and back into the sticks again.

We planted some seed last weekend indoors and our radishes and lettuces have taken right off :D We've also got 2 chilli plant seedlings and 2 cherry tomato seedlings plus a variety of herbs and some spring onions all starting to grow - very satisfying, cos like you its our first attempt to grow anything for our small square of garden. Good luck :D

I've got a new toy. A dehydrator. With all the tins and packets of stuff around, i came to suddenly realise that a balanced menu was lacking. Tinned vegetables and instant mash is all very well but i really love my root vegetables. So far i've been successful with Carrots, Parsnips, White & Red Cabbage, Sweet Potato, Ordinary Potato, Swede, Onions (pointless as these are readily available in handy tubs but i wanted to see if they came out alright). The only casualty was Asparagus but that was probably down to me forgetting to blanche them first. I'm told Cauliflower & Broccoli don't rehydrate very well but i think i will give them a go to see. If you have a local 99p or Pound shop handy, get packets of 8 or 10 plastic food containers which are ideal for storing them (proper #5 plastic for food). Don't forget the Oxygen absorber before sealing. Runner Beans, Sprouts & Sugar Snaps next on my list.

Worked really well bought Mild cheddar from Rosspa online & 1kg cheese wax from Ebay (£12). I used a fondue pot with a meths burner which quickly melted the wax. Submerged the cheese block (impalled on a fork) quickly in the melted wax, withdrew it for 30secs till the wax semi solidified. left it on a grill pan to solidify further & moved to the next chunk of cheese. I repeated the dunking until I thought it looked like a nice thick coat had built up. Any fork holes were filled in with melted wax using the wife's pastry brush.

Took the wax off the heat a couple of times because it was melting the cheese slightly (even with a very quick dip)

Also take care to have the cheese block soundly attached to the fork ,I did have a splash down event at one point which made me jump :D

The whole process is a bit messy so I'd advise plenty of newspapers down & line the grill tray with foil
(I had to heat it & remove the extra wax left on the tray with a bit of kitchen roll which I managed to set alight :o)

Ive got about 40% of the wax left over for next time

The pics I've added show the finished blocks which should be good for at least 10 years (I believe)

Easy to do & only took 45 mins or so to complete I'd recommend anyone to have a go

That's an impressive lifespan! Would be interested to hear how it tastes in a year, 2 yrs etc. I might get some and test it out :)
