While I understand your need to protect yourself and your family ... I would suggest (and it is just a suggestion) that you, at some point, modify or remove the above post as should it ever come to pass (heaven forbid) that this senario did in fact play out ... then your statement above would be seen as premeditation and any mitigating circumstances there were would be discounted.

Just a thought

I decided to 'take up archery' when I realised that many recurve bows come in three easy to assemble parts making them easy to conceal and useless to someone who doesn't know how to put it together. But it was a few weeks later that I saw a youtube video explaining how quiet an air rifle is - and descrete because there is no evidence of the shot afterwards compared to a 30" arrow that ideally you want to recover. The main problem is being seen with a 'gun' that most people couldn't tell is only an air-rifle, although in some circumstances that could be an advantage - all depends on the situation I suppose. I like the idea of the slingshot as I would rather give someone a nasty bruise as a warning shot than reveal the full extent of my equipment, which may in itself draw much more attention.

That's an "interesting" way of applying the law ;)

I guess if the van driver is the Firearms dealer it's ok...well it's up to them but I'm very surprised they are getting away with it. I wouldn't want to bet my freedom on the magistrate not classing this as mail-order (i.e. illegal) sales tbh.

Its the law. They are not"getting away with it" it is how mail order for airguns is now.

Ok I must be confused by what the law is atm..it changes so often...I'd just read that:

"The UK Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006 prohibits online or mail-order sale of new air guns; transactions must be finalised face-to-face, either at the shop where purchased, or through a Registered Firearms Dealer (to which an item may be posted and the transfer completed). The sale and transfer of second-hand airguns is not affected by these restrictions."

I kinda thought this means you either actually have to go to the shop in person or get it sent to a RFD and pick it up in person from them..is this not the case then ? confused...

Edit: looking at the small print I see that they use their own vans and not a postal service and are therefore not actually sending the guns through the postal system as such. Still seems a fairly grey area of the law tbh...maybe I'm just being paranoid and/or thick !

They aren't selling on-line or mail order as such, you order it and pay for it, then they themselves deliver it to the person who ordered it and paid for it, they don't give it to anyone apart from the one who's the named debit/credit card-holder.
Please note, due to new Goverment Legislation, all Air Guns, Co2 Guns Rifles, Pistols & Silencers can only be purchased on a face to face basis from a Registered Firearms Dealer. As an RFD ourselves we will deliver to your door if you live in the Counties listed above and shown on the map below, The person who has purchased the airgun or Co2 gun must be the one to receive it and they must produce proof of identity and age ie Driving Licence Passport etc.
Also remember that this is only for "NEW" air rifles from RFDs, so if member "A" wanted to sell to member "B" and stick it on a couriers van then that is quite legal from what I can assertain, providing that they have absolute evidence thatr they are selling to someone over 18.

ok thanks for clearing up the confusion the-gnole, I havent bought an air rifle since I got my .177 Theoben 20 years ago. Recent changes to the law mean I can't let my sister's kids into the the house because i'm too tight to buy a trigger lock for it ;)

What a shame

But whilst on that subject, I think it is more than just a trigger lock, I am sure it is "No access", as even a gun with a trigger lock can cause problems if out on the street being brandished around by some young person.

Yeah;
Crime and Security Act 2010 created a new offence of failing to take
reasonable precautions to prevent an airgun coming into the hands of a
person under 18.

Which is pretty vague really….
I think it was basically brought in to try and stop people just leaving them laying around the house or under the sofa.
