Maglite accessories

Post by Chef »

I dunno about the majority of members but when I'm out exploring or whatever my trusty Maglite is never far away (in fact it's normally hanging round my waist).

I've got the 2-D Cell version with an LED upgrade on it but there are a few things I want to add to the kit.

Mate of mine has a 6-D cell version and he has the side handle accessory for it, it makes a wicked 'self defence' baton. the side handle on some electric drills could probably be adapted for the same use.

I have the 1w LED conversion straight out of the box from Blacks 4-5 years ago, there is now a 3w and probably better than that CREE unit available.

TTS-3WCR30 for the 2-D Cell

TTS-3WCR45 for 2-3 D Cell

TTS-3WCR90 for 4-6 D Cell

Much brighter light with a CREE bulb than with a normal LED bulb.

One other thing which may be of use is a glass breaking butt cap for the Mags.

Neither Maglite's or the accessories are cheap but they are rock solid, I've dropped mine from rooves, down a quarry, down numerous caves and tunnels and underwater and it's still as good as ever.

I've got smaller tactical CREEs and head torches and some are brighter and lighter but none last as long or give that weighty feeling of security as a Mag. ;)

Just a quick note that "Side handles" are illegal in the UK from what I have found, mind you it was on the internet, and not all is true on the internet ;)

Good point actually I think they are, but SHTF, it's good to whack one on. :D

Not illegal to buy them though and if you have a drill handle that's usable so much the better. ;)

You are missing the point. An item can be offensive in one of three ways: made, adapted or intended.

Items that are made include batons, bayonets etc.

Items that are adapted include toothbrush with razor blades molten into them, bike chains that have sharpened links etc.

Items that are intended can be ANYTHING, such as: a deodorant, an egg, keys etc.

Police treat an arrest as an administrative convenience (even though they shouldn't), they don't have time to argue in the street about the legalities of such a weapon. To enable the prompt and efficient investigation of the offence an arrest is effected.

Even though a 6D Maglite isn't made to cause injury or adapted (unless you put a side-handle on it) it can be reasonably assumed that it is INTENDED. You can get a brighter light output from a smaller torch and a person would find it very difficult in court that they carried it purely to exhibit light when a cheaper, less heavy, less dangerous alternative was available.
(My Highlighting)

I don't think Scoobie will have a problem discussing illegal activities so long as it is in the "post fall" scenario rather than present time. ;)

I have had a few of the Maglite range, AAA solitaire, AA X2 with the LED Conversion kit, 3 "D" Cell normal also a Cree one (Cheap from TKMaxx) and a 4 "D" cell I got for £2 from a charity shop as it had a battery jammed inside that needed to be removed.

Only problem I have had was the rubber button disintegrated on the 3 "D" normal torch.

Have stuck cones on them for traffic movement, and playing Darth Vader ;)

Yeah but that's just basically suss. My camera could be a deadly weapon, just shows what a police state we have become, our rights are being eroded right under our noses and nobody even realises...

I'm a chef and although I no longer cook professionally I sometimes carry my knives from one place to another and they are absolutely lethal, you could shave with all of them quite easily, but they're knives I work with them, if I'm off underground and I've got a 6 D Mag it's going with me, I've been underground sooo many times and one thing you can't do is lose your light, I know our local air raid shelter like the back of my hand, it was, maybe still is the biggest in Europe but without a light... You'd never make it out.

A torch is a torch is a torch, a stick to throw for the dog 'could' be an illegal weapon it's going too far to say what size torch you can carry, they can bite me.

Edit: Actually being a 6 cell doesn't make it any brighter it prolongs the light you have and that would be an easy argument to win in court, as I said I have brighter torches but none that last as long.

The "Side handle" is the problem rather than the torch though.

If anyone looked into the back of my vehicles they might have a wobble on, Chain saw, bow saw, Axe, Machete, Secateurs, Pilots Survival knife all totally illegal in the eyes of the law, but as they have no reason to search my vehicle and they are all out of sight they aren't really a problem. ;)

If they were on the side seat whilst I was driving or in my possession as I was out and about in "A public place" then that is a different story, having a side handle fixed to a torch is classed as an offensive weapon, rather than a defensive one, even with "Good reason"

Lmao, yeah that lot might raise a few eyebrows.

The side handle though we've established would be a handy 'accessory' for post SHTF situations, the law saying you can't carry a 6 D Mag because it can be classed as INTENDED is ludicrous and they can nick and then bite me.

I'm definately not being told what size bloody torch I can carry.

Grrrrrr, that's really pigged me off.

I've been pulled a fair few times wearing camo/black gear with a rucksack full of cameras and torches etc., with 'things' like tripods and abseiling gear hanging from the various straps on it, but once I've explained, or tried to at least, what an urban explorer is and what we do they generally give you a blank expression and send you on your way.

Loads of explorers carry 6 D Mags this has to be a fairly recent addition to thier arsenal of bogus power?

It's ridiculous anyway and I won't be adhereing to that little nugget of some beaurocrats wisdom!

I guess that keeping below the radar is out of the question then, one of the first rules of prepping is keeping a low profile, so I have read on the internet.

If you (not "you") can do with a three cell rather than a six cell and thus avoid being like a moth to a lamp then carry a three cell, if you can carry an LED Lenser in your pocket instead of 3 cell hanging off your kit then carry an LED Lenser, why make a statement when you really don't need too, being a "greyman" when you can is a safe way to go.

As the song goes, "I fought the Law and the Law won"
I FOUGHT THE LAW
The Bobby Fuller Four
(Sonny Curtis)

(A') Breakin' rocks in the ... hot sun
I Fought the Law and the ... law won
I Fought the Law and the ... law won
I needed money, 'cause I ... had none
I Fought the Law and the ... law won
I Fought the Law and the ... law won

I left my baby and I feel so bad
I guess my race is run
Well, she's the best girl ... I've ever had
I Fought the Law and the ... law won
I Fought the Law and the ... law won

(Instrumental Break)

Robbin' people with a . . . SIX gun
I Fought the Law and the ... law won
I Fought the Law and the ... law won

I miss my baby and the ... good fun
I Fought the Law and the ... law won
I Fought the Law and the ... law won

I left my baby and I feel so bad
I guess my race is run
But, she's the best girl ... I've ever had
I Fought the Law and the ... law won

I love my purple solitaire with LED upgrade. Maybe it's because it can make like a candle?
