Colloidal Silver is freely available in the UK, dunno about Europe though.

Lots of info on the above site, they also sell it on Amazon.

I have quite a large stock of Oxytetracycline which is a broad spectrum antibiotic often used in the treatment of Acne but in higher doses it can nip infection in the bud quite quickly.

I still rely on my old fallback though, salt. Salt water, can't beat it for external infections or even a gargle for a sore throat, you know when it's strong enough as the salt stops dissolving and lies in the bottom of the glass/bowl/whatever.

Colloidal silver is a suspension of submicroscopic metallic silver particles in a colloidal base. Long-term use of silver preparations can lead to argyria, a condition in which silver salts deposit in the skin, eyes, and internal organs, and the skin turns ashen-gray. Many cases of argyria occurred during the pre-antibiotic era when silver was a common ingredient in nosedrops. When the cause became apparent, doctors stopped recommending their use, and reputable manufacturers stopped producing them. The official drug guidebooks (United States Pharmacopeia and National Formulary) have not listed colloidal silver products since 1975.

Hmm salt - yes that is something I have overlooked in my stocks, not only for preserving but for medical purposes. Thankies - must buy a bag or two next shopping trip :) When I had my tonsils out a few or more years back - salt garggle was what I had to do do in additional to antibiotics.

I was quite surprised I hadn't read more about it on here, although I do still have alot to read.

Not only can it make a mediocre, even a bland meal taste good, it's also an excellent anti bacterial agent, is useful for washing, cleaning, preserving and loads more besides, it's one of my must haves in any kitchen not only for cooking.

It's soooo cheap per kilo everyone should be stockpiling it, it'll be first on my list. There's an abundance of it all around our coast but try extracting and purifying it, a real pain in the butt, for the price, good ol table salt will be worth it's weight. Also great for extracting moisture from dried goods, hence it's use in preserving.

Addressing a meeting of infectious disease experts in Copenhagen, she said that every antibiotic ever developed was at risk of becoming useless.

"A post-antibiotic era means, in effect, an end to modern medicine as we know it. Things as common as strep throat or a child's scratched knee could once again kill."

It looks like we will have to go back to ancient/medieval methods of herbal remedies and old housewives cures. Not looking good for the future of humankind.
At the moment we can prepare for a total societal collapse, or worry about thermo-nuclear war, or whatever your favourite apocalyptic event may be. Only to live through it all, scratch your knee, and die of a staphlococcal infection.
I have ordered a crate of Speyside Single Malt to add to my preps.( This will be used as anti-septic wound cleaning) ;)
