Fire Brick Maker

I was looking at possibly buying fire brick maker and was wondering if any or you with open fires or log burners have tried them I have large amounts of cardboard and was going to try using that as an alternative to chopping logs as spring seems to be an ideal time to start. Any advice welcomed

The comments I have read say they are not too good, often thin and feeble manufacture, don't get enough water out, so need drying for longer.

Now if you get an old wine fruit press and use one of those instead you might get better results.

I need to find the one I had, I found it at a boot sale a few years back, it was a bit lighter than the one above.

I have also seen one made using the small welding gas bottles with the ends cut off and a hydraulic ram used to squeeze the water out at several dozen pounds per sq inch

Did around 20 last summer out of paper and cardboard! Paper ones are good cardboard seems to fall apart!

Been told to mix paper with sawdust to get a better result! I havnt tried this yet! If you got it use it!

Speaking as somebody who has had coal fires forever - these things are a waste of time. Unless you have a teenager who will happily do it for you, you'll find it quickly becomes more hassle than they're worth. Everybody I know who got one said the same thing.

Good thing about them is they are free, if you don't count your time, and environmentally friendly, which is more important to some than others, and if you can make up enough then store them over a few years you may have a time when you are not paying for fuel for a month or two.

You know what, you've made me feel bad now ( I'm fickle. ) I have loads of cardboard each week so what the hell if I'm going to burn it anyway might as well be as fuel. Watch this space, will give it s try instead of a miss
