That's where I'll have an advantage I'll have hmm, a reasonable lump sum in cash, not interested in mortgage or loans, I'd rather buy outright even in Eastern Europe than owe money in the UK.

Remote Scotland does appeal to me however but only if I could buy outright and not have a mortgage.

Looking at it you might need a fair bit more than that to sort it out, planning applications might be needed, also "Substantial renovation" is a broad spectrum to cover, at least my place wasn't "derelict" when I bought it

I can do all the work from bricklaying, roofing, plumbing, electrical through to painting and decorating myself, I wasn't always a chef

The places I am looking at in Bulgaria are far from DIY jobs some are just shells but it's all doable if you have the skills and inclination.

I want a challenge that I can put my own stamp on, that's half the fun, I'm also happy with make do and mend or recycle I don't need a 22nd century techno dream house, just somewhere warm and cosey with very few neighbours and some water to stick a boat on, I'm happy go lucky and never had alot anyway so can't miss it!

Well I'm getting there, those three I am pretty much doing, just working on and hoping on the early retirement now And living "rent/mortgage" free for the rest of my natural (hopefully)

I guess it depends what the result is of TSHTF big time does to the population, and don't be too surprised if someone will be already there claiming ownership rather than land snatch, I have my eye on a few country houses and their estates

our derilict house plus work needed cost £35,000 and we have land. lots like this around.
no idea how much this one would be....
