Beans, beans and more beans.

Post by Chef »

I got the beans I ordered this morning but they were from fleabay and just come in lil seal easy bags with no destructions. The runners I did have said to plant at beginning of May I think, so I wondered if it was too early to plant some now?

I've got:

Dwarf Bean - Cannelino
Climbing - Borlotto (Lingua di Fuoco 2)
Climbing - French Bean (Blue Lake)
Runner Bean - White Lady (coz buzzards keep eating all the flowers off the red ones) :(

Any of you kind souls know if any of those can go in now? I'm in a warm sheltered ish part of the South East?

Cheers

All I know about beans is that they are not frost hardy, so you plant after all danger of frost has gone. Up here that means 1st June onwards, but you will be a lot earlier I think.

Ah I see thanks Lil, hmmm, frost I guess we could get up until May although normally April is warm n sunny.

I have got a sheet of corrugated plastic roof stuff I could bend to make a cloche kinda thing, maybe I'll use that and some black plastic sacks to warm the ground first and leave it till mid April.

Thanks :)

I always start my beans in the greenhouse and plant out when a few inches high. Last year though as I planted out we hit a cold patch of weather and they decided to slow right down. By come summer they still produced well.

Ah could start a few in my lil GH I guess so they had a head start for going in the ground mid April. :)

So they don't mind being transplanted then, cool. :D

Not sure if she got it from http://www.lakeland.co.uk/52058/Paper-P ... tAod2Ro40g

I've seen those, quite a nifty gadget, I normally use the half a loo roll tube for disposable pots, all our newspaper and paperwork with personal info etc, get shredded for bedding for my lads ferret. Quite a green household, well we try to be, thinking of a wormery next. :)

We did that, never got any further though

But we have looked at the wiggly wigglers site for ideas, their stuff is not cheap, but they do send you worms through the post
