Re: Crossbow. Is it really necessary?
I got one crossbown got it more for fun then my preps but would see how would be usefull in SHTF. Agree with skippy buy lots bolts as you go through them like hot dinners and get good target to shoot at no wood or metal like skippy said. Try ebay for targets thats were I got my cube shape target from its got a sturdy foam fill inside its bit smaller then a target on stand like you see a lot archey clubs and does not damage the bolts on impact.

Re: Crossbow. Is it really necessary?
I'm looking to get a slingshots, smaller, lighter and easier to carry than a crossbow. I sold my crossbow the other week, had it for ages in my wardrobe it was really fun at first but they take up to much room when your not using it and the bolts aren't cheep.nickdutch wrote:I personally don't see the point of using up time and energy researching crossbows as we can perfectly legally get or make slingshots. Some of which have a 35 lb draw weight, and some are reported (on some website or other) to go up to 50 lb draw weight (or more) and can only be pulled by the strongest of men.
"Good" slingshots are supposed to deliver a force that is 3 - 4 times the legal maximum of an air rifle in the UK, although they might be lower in range due to the higher mass of the projectile.
Some slingshots can be modified into slingbows which fire arrows (illegal for hunting in the UK at the moment as all arrow hunting is), but slingshots might be a good place to start.
Powerful, legal, accurate, home make-able and great fun.
If you go on youtube and search for slingbows there is a video that shows you how to make one and demos of them being used and they are a lot cheaper than a crossbow.
I'm not trying to put anyone off I just think once the novelty has worn off you could be a bit gutted like I was
But all that said if you are prepping to use it if the shtf for hunting and you have the cash to spare then why not

Re: Crossbow. Is it really necessary?
i intend on getting a cross bow and cross bow pistol... SHTF, ueful... everyday life, good fun!
if SHTF, someone with a crossbow and has spent time with it and can shoot well will have a huge advantage.

Re: Crossbow. Is it really necessary?
I currently have many firearms in my family and own a few my self. The problem with firearms is that and once you use all your ammo. They become expensive clubs. (As the saying goes)
When i realized this i bought a regular bow. Which i think is very ineffective.
As a result i have decided to buy more ammo and buy all the equipment necessary for making shotgun cartridges which is completely legal.
Of course firearms cannot be used for self defense in the uk so they are for hunting purposes only.
I am currently thinking of investing in a crossbow aswell. Especially considering you can re-use the blots .

I don't know about you but I would never use my rifle as a club would trust it to be effective enough for defence , IMO I would attach a bayonet that I bought and use it for a spearAberdeenshirePrepper wrote:I currently have many firearms in my family and own a few my self. No its more a saying, as in once you run out of ammo they're useless. Unless like you say you attach a bayonet.Huntsman wrote:I don't know about you but I would never use my rifle as a club would trust it to be effective enough for defence , IMO I would attach a bayonet that I bought and use it for a spearAberdeenshirePrepper wrote:I currently have many firearms in my family and own a few my self. I would never use them for defense as that is illegal. Unless the law changed.

Re: Crossbow. Is it really necessary?
I mean obviously, I would never condone defending your property against criminals. You should leave the door unlocked and don't forget the milk and cookies! You could even tie up yourself so they don't have to. I mean we have to obey the law.......AberdeenshirePrepper wrote:No its more a saying, as in once you run out of ammo they're useless. But seriously if it comes down to a fight and your out of ammunition, you have made some big mistakes

Re: Crossbow. Is it really necessary?
Has any one ever used or considered using an atlatl and darts?
I don't suppose they are as imposing as a xcrossbow in a confrontation by looking at youtube I suspect they would make for good hunting in the right hands.
I've no experience with them but by all acounts they're easy to make your self from readily available materials.
Edit Typos.

I know little about darts but the atlatl was originally developed for hunting birds if I remember correctlyVespa wrote:Has any one ever used or considered using an atlatl and darts?
