Also bear in mind that Viruses can and do get transmitted through the eyes.

If/when H5N1 ever goes "pandemic" the usual is likely to happen, CAR goes up, CFR goes down, that's just as nature intended.

Currently it has a very low CAR, but a very high CFR, it is also in countries where "standards" are very much different to a lot of the other countries in the world.

And having the seasonal vaccine will have no effect on a pandemic strain as it is new and different to all the others, certainly enough to make it difference.

One of the reasons we haven't got a "|Cold" vaccine is that it changes so regularly that they can't keep up with it in the labs, it takes a week to see off a cold with medication, otherwise it's seven days.

Interesting read.

Science behind Contagion

The Warner Bros film Contagion is released in the UK this week. It depicts the rapid spread of a deadly virus and the global scientific and social reactions in this time of crisis. Of course, movie makers like to show us the worst case scenarios, but director Stephen Soderberg has tried to make Contagion an ‘ultra-realistic’ movie. A team of scientific advisors for the film including Dr Nathan Wolfe, a human biology professor and director of the Global Viral Forecasting Initiative, have made sure the fiction is never too far from fact.

Just watched the movie Contagion - scary to think about how something like that can spread so rapidly and kill so many in such a short time.

I don't have anything in the house to prepare for a pandemic - I would like to get some face masks and hand sanitiser (lots of it).

Just realised that since I've been at home and off full time work just under a year now, I haven't suffered from flu or colds in this time period, something I had quite often when I was working in an office environment and catching the trains, tubes and buses every day.

I really liked that film, thought it did a pretty good job without being too hollywood.

As for my plan.....I really dont have one  I have a pretty good immune system....comes from being a mongrel I think  I work with the public, in a busy cafe which gets visitors from around the world, not to mention all the mummies and their snot ridden children etc etc and I am rarely ill, even when all my co workers have gone down with the seasonal whatever I dont get it. And my daughter is the same, she's never had anti biotics, and I cant remember the last time we had to go to the doctors for anything. I do consider myself very fortunate.
