Ok im looking for a balance in my tinned goods in my bob only problem is the tinned fruit.
I would like all the cans or good in my bob to aleast have several years best before date that way i can be secure in the knowledge everything in there is good to go and i dont need to check or swap out goods.
Tinned meat have best before dates with years on 2015 and 2016 i could leave them in my bag for years but tinned fruit seems to be within the year is it worth getting the tinned fruit or am i just over thinking it.
Tinned Fruit
Re: Tinned Fruit
There is a website that looks at foods and how far you can go beyond the use by date, I can't remember what it is, I'm sure someone else will be able to point you in the right direction.
Yesterday I opened a can of pears that was a year over date and they were perfectly fine.

Re: Tinned Fruit
The more acid the tinned content ,the shorter the date. Tomatoes only get a year.
You need to stock ,eat, stock. That way your tins are bang up to speed.

Re: Tinned Fruit
a quick note on tinned tomatoes - if you're overstocked and nearing / past bbe date, you can make tomato chutney with them and that way you'll get another 1-2 years out of the stock (as long as you sterilise and store properly) - or have something different for swaps.
Re: Tinned Fruit
If you are thinking of using tinned goods in a BOB, I hope you're not expecting to walk much. The extra weight over dried goods is not worth it. If you think it's no problem i can carry my bag easy...well think what other items you could add and still keep the weight the same by swopping in freeze-dried food...which also tends to have very good BB dates. Just my 2-pence worth, as I'm a ultralight hiker by hobby

Re: Tinned Fruit
Dehydrated fruit and nut mix or muesli is lighter and easier maybe to keep, but still has all your vitamins etc.
Re: Tinned Fruit
I actualy was planning on going on tin heavy, purely to save on lack of preperation time suppose i could look into dried fruit.

Er, she who must be obeyed was making some weird foreign nosh the other day 'spag bog ?' Hit Arkwrights and came out with tinned chopped tomatoes best before Dec 2010 and Tinned Red Kidney Beans also OOD. I'm told they were fine.
Use your nose. If it smells ok, try it.
Watch Your Tins. If their looking Manky & Dented or Blown, avoid. As Arkwrights (4m x 5m metal prep shed) has a perspiration problem all our tinned foods are de-labeled and given a thin coat of Petroleum Jelly.
Back It up. If your using tins you'll find they fill the hole, but the nutritional value decreases with age. Multi vitamins are your friends.
