Hello from Poole

Post by TopCatUK2 »

Hi. Found this site through random set of links when trying to look up shelf stable foods in UK, so thanks 'y'all' for derailing me from that search!!!!

Always had a vague interest in apocalyptic scenarios since reading Day of the Triffids as a child, so decades later, I'm still interested in that sort of fiction and no, I don't believe the world will end in 2012, but I do see a very real probability of eventual infrastucture breakdown and societal collapse if things continue to deteriorate.

Single, 42-year old female (ok, so I'm working on being the neighbourhood crazy cat lady) with some mobility issues that mean I pretty much fall into bed when I get home from work. However, I don't want to rely on other people. Working full-time and in rented accommodation, so finances are challenging and I can't do what I want to the property, but it doesn't mean I can't get some ideas and get the right mental attitude. Possible redundancy in next 6 - 12 months means I need to get focused.

I've started teaching myself how to do BASIC foraging and even made jellies/jams the last couple of years. Want to get more into that, energy levels permitting. I also see that there is a DIY course for women on in September at adult education classes, so interested in that.

Tried gardening for the first time a couple of years ago...a bit hit and miss due to mobility issues and..really...are potatoes worth the amount of water you have to give them? This year, gardening has consisted of chillis, peppers and a couple of tomato plants on the windowsill. My other seedlings died off due to being away with work and it raining all the flippin time, so never even made it into my plastic greenhouse.

I've started gathering a load of materials, e-books, videos from on-line sources, I just don't have time to sort it all out and need to prioritise the basics.

Any questions just ask! :D

Welcome! Another woman here, single also - couple of counties over from you, but still on the south coast :) I'm amazed at the number of women here, but thinking about it, its not really surprising, once you get past the stereotype Rambo stuff.

I moved into my house a couple of years ago now, and I just started what you're describing, the jams and jellies - and chutneys too. If you have any ideas on what to do with sloes that *doesn't* involve alcohol, I'd love to hear it - I made sloe chutney, and its got so much sugar in, it might as well be a jam, and it still kind of puckers the mouth!

Day of the Triffids - love it!

Evening, all. Thanks for the warm welcome. Still getting caught up on the forum, so much to see, so little time. Good to know other ladies out there as well, but it's generally good to find a relatively well-balanced site that seems more or less religion and politics free, unlike the American links I've come across at the weekend.

I'm sure I will have loads of questions, but want to catch up on forum generally first, make sure I'm not asking stupid questions that have been answered elsewhere numrous times.
