Hello all

I've been interested in prepping for about a year now.

Although I only learnt that was the word for what I am a few months back when I watched a documentary about preppers in the US. Imagine my surprise when I stumbled onto UK preppers.

What got me interested in prepping was last summers riots sort of got me thinking. Most of my life has been a time of relative stability in the economy and everyone was fairly happy. It woke me up. There haven't really been any bad riots in my lifetime. But seeing peoples true nature assert itself was a very shocking experience. What really got me was the threatened strike by tanker drivers earlier in the year. I began to realize how dependent everyone is on the grid. And how a militant trade union could easily bring the country to its knees. If I'd been around in the 70's and the 80's I would have woken up sooner. Society lives hand to mouth on everything from fuel, food, drinking water. And I decided that I was going to do something about that.

The things I'm mainly prepping for is the coming economic crisis. Its quite possible that a disorderly break-up of the eurozone will cause a global bank run. Such things have happened in the recent past in Argentina. In Germany after both the wars they suffered hyper inflation. Where money becomes worthless. In the UK everything is imported or depends on imported fuel to transport it. I'm concerned at the prospect of mass starvation, the power going out because there's no money to fuel the power stations, or money to buy the gas for the central heating. An outbreak of Cholera because the sewage system has packed up and there is no money for doctors or medicine.

Other things that also concern me are EMP - Electro Magnetic Pulse an act of nuclear attack by a rouge nation that would destroy all modern electronics. Or a coronal mass ejection from the sun that would destroy the power grid and could take years to put right.

I'm only a couple months into prepping. But I have plenty of projects I want to get on with.

Hi and welcome - Indeed - the EMP subject is one that should be looked into seriously - both natural (Solar) and man-made
The book 'One Second After' covers that very subject and is discussed in detail on the 'educational/books and videos' section - worth a read if you have not already done so
