container store

Post by danby825 »

Im looking at building a 2x40ft shipping container underground store built into the side of a hill with the grazing above for livestock I dont know how uk planners will react to it but if its for Agri use I might get away with it im thinking just the fronts will be seen while the rest will be buried in the side of the hill it will have a very low visual impact "green painted doors" no glass or anything like that maybe a ground mounted solar system off grid for power and maybe a woodburner for heat cooking fitted on the quite as its starting to sound like a dwelling as opposed to a agri storage now but hey if the SHTF I don't think my local planning officals are going to be worried about it the basic structure will take about 2 weeks of machine work and welding to get in place then back fill and re-seed then a week to fit the solar and another few days for the woodburner water would be a outside job as i would have a bore hole drilled before work started and fit a water holding tank underground natural light will come from small solar reflectors built in the roof that will be sunken in to the ground level so as not to be seen what do you all think?

Lots of posts on here if you have a search around about using containers. Tbh, a far simpler solution is simply to buy 2 containers and put them on the ground and use them ? No planning is needed then and its 0 effort :D Obviously its not quite the effect you might be looking for, but what you suggest is a lot of hard work and planning wise might cause aggro depending on your local officers.

Buried containers are known for serious corrosion and condension problems, if you dont take this into account your stores might get damaged or destroyed :(

And of course planting will lessen the visual impact - something fast growing like willow or even bamboo.

First problem is water will come up through the bottom. As most have wooden floors with gap's. So a lot of planning will have to go into where they will go. A high water table will bugger annythink you put inside. Unless you can sort out this problem and put in plans for dranage i would not bother. You get a sealed type but they cost a lot. This is just one of a few problems that will arise. Any questions you have on a TEU or Container feel free to ask as i do know my stuff when it come's to Containers.
Also one word of caution, the roof's of them will NOT take the weight of a lot of soil on top of them. The design of them only allows them to take weight through the 4 corners.

Its funny i posted this then really started looking into it seems they dont do well under ground and after walking over the field this morning and a passer by that I knew waving at me I realised the biggest problem of all the building might be hidden but going to and fro isnt!!!
