It depends on many things. What you think is going to happen, what your personal definition of preparedness is.
For me, I keep it simple as I can. Sure I want a massive solar array, i want all kinds of things, but i will work towards them step by step.
I have some basic dry goods in stock to help me out. I have learned about how to make my own bread, how to sprout lentils and mung beans and I have learned how to shoot with a slingshot catapult.
I am unlikely to ever go totally hungry.
I have also got technology to make bioethanol so that i can keep my place warm in the case of a power cut and to cook and provide a modicum of hot water for cleaning, cooking and more. I have also learned about dehydrating and canning.
Who is to say what the world will bring or whether "it" will happen in our generation? But slowly building a way of life that is conductive to some kind of autonomy is a good thing. And if "it" doesn't happen in my life, then I can make sure that my kids (if I am ever lucky enough to have any) do think about basic preparedness and personal efficiency.
I am less worried about the news these days as whatever is going to happen is going to happen and I can't stop it, but I can slowly, on my very limited budget, learn and develop skills.

Re: New and worried!
Hello and welcome to the forum.
I don't need to add much because most of the sound advice has already been given by some valued members of the forum.
But remember the TV shows take the extreme of the extreme to make it good viewing. Their personal views on Armageddon/ end of the world etc will be extreme because the statement ' I'm prepping just in case I loose my job' doesn't make good viewing
Any questions, just ask and we'll do our best to help you.

Hi and welcome !
I'm so impressed that your first stop is a forum to get advice and tap in to the experience of others' I was prepping for about a year (on and off!) before I came here and I could have gained a lot by being here first, so you're a step ahead of where I was at the beginning!
Good luck and ask away!

Re: New and worried!
i think as to, should you stay put or bug out depends on where your base is located and what is most likly to effect it, as to bugging out a place of choice must be researched as to its suitability for short term and long term viability, remembering that a multitude of factors from weather conditions to people can influence your choice.a good long look at your personal situation is a good place to start and then your imediate needs followed by medium and then long term requirements.basic requirements and skill learning are a must. my starting point was a good pair of boots broken in and waterproof, everthing followed from there lol.

Re: New and worried!
ITs never to late to start prepping, i wouldnt take to much notice of tv show, the producers have only picked some of the worst kind of preppers and blowing things out of preportion. The most likley things to happen in this country are hyper-inflation, pandemics, and with these civil unrest, so make lists dont panic and think things out,and if your not sure about anything ask the preppers on here, theres no such thing as a stupid question if you dont know the answers
