Couple of other options you might want to think about.

For simple charcoal filters have a look at

But bear in mind, charcoal filters are good for getting rid of solids and will help to get rid of some bacteria but will not get rid of everything.

A very simple but effective bacterial treatment is to use the uv radiation from the sun. Put your strained water in a plastic bottle and leave in direct sunlight for a few hours. This will kill off most things, has to be plastic though. Glass stops the uv light.

Commercial filters for getting rid of bacteria use silver, often in a ceramic matrix. In the old days sailors would put silver coins in water barrels to keep them fresh and they were often put in old fashioned water tanks. If you want to try this out get some old solid silver coins, don't use modern ones as they have nickel in them. Not sure where you are but in the UK I believe coins made before 1938 were made using solid silver and can be found in any coin dealer, although please check this as I am going by memory.

So if you filter water through sand/ charcoal filter, into a plastic bottle, leave out in the sun for a while, then pour into a storage bottle with some silver coins in it then you should have it all covered.

Silmple to make and no special parts.

Im aware I really need to get a water filter sorted and have narrowed down to either a Lifesaver or a Katadyn Combi - if I use the KC do I still need to further treat water to remove virus's that the Lifesaver would automatically remove? or should I just filter then boil..

Ive also become very paranoid re radiation in water and had read it cant be filtered out then found this US based filter which uses Zeolite and apparently CAN remove radiation ;

Not in the slightest, I wouldn't want to drink the water from the outfall of a nuclear plant though, but the chances of me needing to are so remote I don't even register it as a concern.

We (royal we) drink water that has been in circulation for millions of years, in fact it has pretty much been through everything from Dinosaurs to the bloke next door and through rivers and canals that have run-off from chemical and farming sources.

Do we worry about that ?
