My mother's husband commented tonight about my garden being a smallholding-'bet this saves a few bob' says he.
Precisely the angle to come in at if you want to convince someone I reckon.
Convince people prepping is worth it - espec family!
Re: Convince people prepping is worth it - espec family!
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.
Robert Frost.
Covid 19: After that level of weirdness ,any situation is certainly possible.
Me.

Re: Convince people prepping is worth it - espec family!
my parents and daughters know that ive got a good store of food and water and thats it , no one else .
as for how to bring the subject up with out giving the game away ,so to speak .
i did it the easy way , when i was a lot younger than i am know my dad slipped a disc in his spine , as a kid you don`t realy understand the long term effects of such a thing .i brought this up a while back . it did make the convo easyer for them to relate to .
if you liken it to todays world , this happens and you end up out of work . so no job = no income , no income = no food or very little food . .
when my kids were young i went through a similar thing after having major surgery on my kidney ,that lead to 18 months off work and a real struggle to make ends meet . i vowed never to go there again . the hardest thing in the world for me at that time was asking my parents for help .
so i think the short answer is ask them what would happen if they got made unemployed for any reason , some thing as simple as this can have a major effect on how people look at their life .

Humour time ;-
My mother in law is 72 and her hubby is 80 soon, annd she has been prepping for a year or two, only thing is she's prepping for the end
making sure she's spent everything, left her body to science so she has no funeral expenses, I could say she's thrifty but that wouldn't be the half of it, they live about 250 miles away and came to visit recently, got to say I didn't want to see them now, for them to turn up on the doorstep would be a SHTF situation on it's own.
For us Pagans it was called coming out of the broom cupboard, gay folk it was the closet, is it to be out of the bomb shelter for preppers ?
Seroiusly though we haven't really given it any thought until now, and I have to say the few friends we do have probably see the sense in it, some may well be allready doing it, could even be here with a different knickname than they use elsewhere
because some things are not going to be hidden (archery equipment is dotted around, only arrows are locked in cupboards) any visitor in the know would sense the prepping as easily as a pagan would all the witchy parafinalia kicking around, bookshelves give you away aswell, so does your taste in DVDs.
If you have room for more people and their preps and they do like the idea of heading your way you could really be on a winner in a real SHTF situation by including your family in them, but you would have to have resources way beyond the average to be offering ( or letting someone even family asume) refuge at your location for zero contribution.

I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

Try saying something like...Most people (who are not preppers) have insurance for cars, houses, pets, mobiles etc. Surely this is a type of prepping just in a monetary sense, now if money became defunct those people would be stuck, however if they insure against this by having a few things stored away....
On a personal note I cant broach this subject with friends or family, Im Bi-polar but been med free for 10 years (use therapys instead) they would just have me commited and zombified within a week.

We discussed a similar situation some weeks ago when I posted details of my Ambilac survival and preparednes site promoting September as a UK Preparedness month - I ran it for 3 years previously as December but changed it to come into line with the FEMA preparedness month...So many people - present company excepted of course - are so lethargic to these ideas it will literally take a Nuke unmder their proverbials for them to smell the java..
Anyhoo here is my UK preparedness month section http://www.ambilacuk.com/safesurvival/september.html
Incidentally - in the four years I have run this preparedness month 99.9% of the interest and feedback came mainlky from tne States, then Aussie and Europe...not a flicker from old blighty!! ah well....we plod on...

I wouldn't discuss it with my family. It would be a disaster.
If you're thinking about broaching it then I suspect you already know the response.
Don't do it unless you're sure ,you'd perhaps be better just accounting to include them if necessary

I don't tell anyone including my wife. She watches doomsday preppers with me and calls them nutters so I know what her response will be.
I have tons of toilet rolls ' because they were on offer '. I have stockpiles of tinnedgoods because I get them cheap at wholesalers. I grow vegetables because I like gardening. I have plenty of storage space in the basement where I can stash things. I just get on with it slowly..

I agree with that. My sister is great and has a heart of gold but she is also the original dumb blonde, talking to her about prepping or self sufficiency would be like talking to a brick wall, a brick wall that would blab about her weird brother to her friends while laughing about it. However, I wouldn't turn her away if there was a problem, in fact I would probably go and collect her and bring her round to our place so I prep for her as well to a certain extent. In the Dark wrote:you'd perhaps be better just accounting to include them if necessary
