oats

Post by storm.ridley »

Hello all, im looking for advice on storing oats, can someone tell me if basic rolled oats with no added flavourings or adatives can be stored in PET clear plastic bottles, like water bottles? and is there any differance between a bag of oats and the single portion sizes you can get like the oatso simple just add milk ones?
many thanks

you can store them like that but you would need to use an oxygen absorber in there too , personnel i would use Aluminum laminated bags with oxygen absorbers and vacuum pack them

I dont know anything about the pkts of instant porridge but rolled oats you would need to store properly as Tigs says because you can get weevils like you do in flour.

Silica packets absorb moisture and oxygen absorbers do same for oxygen. If your oats are suitably dry and stored in an airtight container then strictly speaking a silica packet shouldn't be needed, but theres no harm putting them in to ensure low moisture content. Oxygen absorbers only need to be needed for long-term storage of 2+ yrs really, they stop food going off by removing oxygen from your container thus restricting growth of bacteria and other food-spoilage causing organisms.

Please note that PET bottles are not airtight, air penetrates through the plastic walls of the bottles and will also go through the cap area after you open and attempt to re-close it. You might notice that the BBD on PET bottles is less than that of the same drinks in cans ? Thats because air leaks in and increases the rate of spoilage. I'd second tigs suggestion of aluminiumised bags (mylar) for proper storage solution.
