1940's Book

Post by Grunter »

Just bought a book that was apparently very popular in the early forties when people needed to grow their own food as a necessity.Its very informative complete with excellent finely detailed line drawings of killing bunnies with your bare hands etc.
It's title is (deep breath);
How to Grow and Produce Your Own Food: An illustrated guide to the cultivation and preservation of vegetables and fruit of every kind for the home and allotment gardener:with full instructions for keeping chickens,rabbits,goats and bees (phew) by Charles Boff.
I like old books and this has a lovely copperplate written message on the inside page saying "To David with much love from Cynthia, Christmas 1945"
I learn't something new on the very first page I looked at, which informed me that if I find one of my Hens eggbound I should hold its backend over a bowl of steaming water and if does not work to stimulate its backend with a greased feather! :oops:

Thank for sharing Grunter.
I think old books are excellent preps to have, teaching us how to do things without relying on the modern technologies we have today.

I have the wartime "keeping poultry and rabbits on scraps".Much to learn in it. It was an era of resourcefulness. Something we have lost to a large degree. It is my belief that any economy crash would put us back to that standard of living overnight.
Enjoy your read!
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.
