Batteries

Post by AJH »

I have a few deep cycle lead acid batteries I’m keeping charged, some big and some small. I was wondering if anyone has any experience in making a battery? Even with good care they will die at some point, what is the best way (when the shops are no more) to recondition or make a new high amp 12 volt battery?

from what little knowledge i have of car batteries, what kills them is a build up of sludge in the cells and also oxidisation of the plates, and overheating them
generally deep cycle batteries have thicker plates which is why they are no good for high amperage use as they overheat and buckle

having a supply of de ionised water and sulphuric acid tabs might revive a duff battery if you "wash" it out but the fluid will be highly toxic and acidic so dispose of carefully and out doors as the fumes will be harsh/dangerous

then it should be just a case of using a really slow trickle charger to build it back up, but will take a long time, a battery with "blown" sides should be avoided as it will have been overheated at some point causing the plastic outer to buckle and usually warping the plates
