Awesome idea...Can we not get this organised amongst the co-ordinators? maybe have a system where there is at least x 2 stations per area that has the channel open for 1 hour per day (i am thinking in terms of power usage) for dedicated situation reports from each area....i.e. post SHTF if i am bugging out and thinking of going a certain direction or into another area, i would like to know that a starving army of chavs is battling a rogue ex army unit etc and not walk into to trouble.
Even just having secure locations for those BI who can communicate with the rest of the country would be useful? you never know what nuclear power plants might go into meltdown? what areas might suffer toxic pollution or a natural disaster. it would bring a nice sense of order and stability to everyone who is in the system just to hear the voices everynight...even if it is just

"Area 1....No raiders seen today......no casualties........our wind turbine is charging batteries.....we have surplus medical supplies but need vehicle mechanic....out"
"Area 2....large group of raiders heading west away from my location....no casualties.....etc ect

I pretty much had ideas for organising something like this but was shouted down (apparently you cant bring ideas to the table as a newbie and i use too much military slang?! ho hum) so can someone else with 'experience' on this forum maybe push the idea forward? i am quite happy to write up a nice simple instruction that can be sent out to every CB/HAM user. i am not a techy with the actual frequencies so whomever the expert is in that field do let me know.

Rgr understood.

That aside...Im glad your here. Do you know if the communications subject is being pushed forward scoobie? it seems that communications is sparsely sprinkled through the threads and i was wondering if there is a dedicated thread for CB/HAM owners to discuss frequencies/ effective ranges and comms blackspots? Being as we are prepping for TSHTF i would assume that GSM Mobile networks and the internet would be the first to go (with the power grid) and leave us all high and dry with no way of communication? Or is it down to individual members to set up their own systems to eachother? Just a little clarification would be useful before i decide what set i shall organise.

Many Thanks

Ben

viewtopic.php?f=15&t=4147&start=20 has some comms talk, its spread out throughout the forum for the most part.

p.s. I can throw up a GSM network if needed, I have the kit, although its a little thirsty on the power. USRP2 can be used for a bunch of things, useful tool, bit pricy if its not a hobby.

Comms is sparsely sprinkled through the forum as you note, and I think it could be useful to have a section purely for comms. However, I don't like to have a forum category for everything as I find it dilutes the forum too much, and just makes it look too big. The other challenge we face is we do not have enough members who are licensed amateurs, or are interested in it to make it a viable standalone section, even less to have a linked up network. (Will be happy to be proved wrong if there is demand for it though!)

I think one thing to note is that everyone has a different view of what TS hitting TF means for them. Some are prepping for job loss, economic downturn etc. Not everyone is prepping for SitX where the mobile networks are down, and there are roving gangs and general lawlessness etc.

I'm interested and in comms myself, have been a licensed amateur for 5 years and before then was an active listener and into CB in my teenage years...

I would gently suggest that SniperBen get his foundation ham license and then come back here with some ideas when he has a better feeling for what is possible, both from the point of radios and from the demands and culture of this forum.

I too am licensed and like most hams have my own arrangements local and world wide, most do. I would not join another.

Hi All, Some good feedback, sounds like i have found the right people. (Ian dont gently suggest...if you know the way just say mate!) Feel free to correct me but I assume ham licensing is completed via ofcom? i know thats where our work comms were licensed.

Ref- Sets....what do they go for these days? i am used to handheld/vehicle fit HF/VHF and thats it im afraid. Our techy guy at work is deployed at the moment so i cant even bug him about it :( I am guessing the uk is limited by power outputs and frequency allocations etc?

Quick answer:

£35 for a UHF handy, but for a general coverage SW rig, probably £150 and up for a used old tech rig if you can find one! This will cover all HF amateur bands (160-10m). Antennas are simple to construct, but more challenging to match to the transceiver.

Honestly the best thing to do is find a local club and get training and take the foundation exam.(it's just a couple of days over a weekend or two) If you have any radio and/or electronics knowledge you'll breeze it. You can't do the exam without undertaking the training.

You will learn about what frequencies you can use, as well as get some hands on time. Then you can get on the air and develop your knowledge and skills.

The legal power is 10 watts, but if you choose the right transmission mode with a decent antenna, you can communicate globally with favourable conditions...

I should clarify, the legal output power is for the foundation license. It increases if you take the more advanced exam later on.

So, when you're saying "a local club", is it these sort of guys, scoobie?
