Re: princes ham
TY greebo - I got 6 tins of the ham for the stash

Re: princes ham
Thanks my next door neighbour shops at Asda so I'll get her to pick some up for me.
Re: princes ham
These hams are not what they used to be, tinned ham. But are now 'formed from choice cuts of leg of pork with added water and pork gelatine'. In other words moulded from mechanically recovered sludge held together with jelly.

As you may tell I am sorely disappointed with what were pleasant tin contents that used to be a special treat.

I've no idea what it says on the Princess Ham tin, and neither process is nice but I'm afraid you've confused "formed" and "reformed".Ian wrote:These hams are not what they used to be, tinned ham. If it says "Reformed" then it's mechanically separated as you mention. It doesn't have to contain just meat but gristle, connective tissue and whatever else can be forced from the carcass and mashed.
However, if it says "formed" then it is still actual cuts of meat from many animals, bones removed, and sort of kneaded by a machine. Then, they have water, salt and possibly loads of preservatives and flavours injected. They're then formed into a ham shape and cut.
Like I said, neither is a great way of treating meat but it is possible to get reasonable "formed" meat products. It's rare, but they don't have to be stuffed with nasty flavourings and preservatives.
That said, in a SHTF situation, I'm not going to be fussy about which one I eat

Re: princes ham
thanks,
I don't usually shop in asda but I'll swing by this evening and try and get some ham. Thanks greebo

Re: princes ham
yeah im going to go take a look at this because most of my prep foods are princes as you can basically get a whole meal in a tin with a good shelf life
Re: princes ham
Its not the tastiest I will admit, but added to a stew or pea and ham soup etc you can not really tell, it breaks down well, also for a change make your own batter, Add a little ale for flavouring and fry the buggar high calorie for busy days.
