My top 5 are:

Fruit
Peas
Potatoes
Rice Pudding
Baked Beans

I am vegie so I dont store meat but I do preserve some fish that I catch mainly Mackerel for the kids.

Lots of jam & Marmalade in jars.
Lots of Tomato Pasata in tetra packs, I find it cheaper than tinned toms and more cals and vits per kg than tinned.

They are also square/oblong shaped and square things fit into square cupboards much easier than round things do, maximising space.

Yes good thinking although I dont store mine in the cupboards, I store them in the space between the top of my tins and the bottom of my kitchen cupboards (behind the kick-board) as it maximizes the space under there.

Yes. I agree. And custard. Also very, very important!
