It's taken me half an hour to defrost!!
Its warm down this way, it was even quite nice when I went out for a 5am run.

Winter car kits are a real must, but having a heat source for the house that does not require mains power/gas and suitable clothes are a must too. I've still got everything from last year, plus enough food for a few months if need be. I avoid canned soups, that I know a lot of people love on here as they have insanely high levels of salt but I will make my own and freeze it.

I am going to try a deep cycle leisure battery with an invertor to run the boiler if the electricity fails. Eventually I'd like a couple of batteries on solar hookup, but funding is an issue (as ever). My boiler consumes 140w to keep it running but it doesn't need to be on continuously. Anyone done this already? Id love to have a lister diesel genny eventually as well (but that will also have to wait)
So many plans so little cash :D

Well I have had to get some more bottled water in as winter pipe freezing preps because the other night we lost our water supply for only about 4 mins. though it was only for a few mins the disruption stirred up the sediment in the pipes and I had rust water for the next hour or so, so I ended up opening a 2l bottle of water for my stores.

- have wind-up lantern, torcher, batts, candles, tealights.
- have hexi cooker (which works well in back door area), wind guard, plenty of spare fuel tabs. Plus mess tin, tin mugs, flasks.
- have lots of warm clothing, strong shoes, walking boots, spare laces.

We don't have an open fire unfortunately, which I'd love. If SHTF I could always knock-in the brick cover to our original Victorian fireplace. Why people bricked all those in in the '70s I'll never know...

When my neighbour moved in he ripped out his fireplaces so I mentioned I might be able to use it he just chucked it over the hedge for me :D
A complete victorian fireplace is easily worth £ 3-400 so I think I got a good deal there !

As I write this I am in front of my woodburner. I too, would never consider a house without a fireplace. It is not a cheaper alternative, not at all. It is just an alternative.

all the touches have new batterys but Im looking for more candles and may be a parafin lamp if I can get some money together. With the winter price rises Im going to look at getting the fireplace sorted out( previouse owners ripped the fire out damaging the lineing) would like a wood burner.
