Is it possible ???

Post by Muker »

Hey there. I have just bought a static caravan for my BOL and was wondering if I can take the gas fire out of it and put in a wood burning stove? I am on a very tight budget as the other half sadly does not agree with my prepping ways l  so as cheeply as possible. Any suggestions?

well gypsy caravans had and still have then so i guess yes it is possible , but you will have put in some fireproofing around it as for the stove its self you could go with a frontier stove http://wildstoves.co.uk/outdoor-heaters ... ier-stove/ or one of windy smithy's stoves http://www.windysmithy.co.uk/html/woodburners.htm

Are you on your OWN land, or on a site?

I owned a static on a well run site for ten years, and anything like solid fuel is ABSOLUTELY illegal. For good reason too- they go up in a flash.

If on your own land and beholden to nobody then you could do what you suggest. However the regulations are there for a reason, and I personally would not do away with the gas fire. They are wuite efficient and don't use a lot of gas in reality. But that too needs regular servicing- again for good reason.

Ye it's my own land. But I do agree that it could be quite dangerous and I do have two yung uns so maybe I will stick with the gas. My thinking was that is a SHTF situation I won't be able to get gas refills quite as easy as I can now lol

If you stock up on gas, it does not eat anything-in fact it is a hedge against inevitable fuel inflation. A static on your own land is a great idea for BOL, and easy to make a home from home.

How about one of those woodburners tigs mentioned and an awning, you could go as far as getting one with a boiler built in, and fit a radiator or two in the caravan and a hot water tank, caravans are firetraps as are tents for that matter, but I see the logic in wood burners, you neither have to buy nor store the fuel now, fuel is one of my bigest worries, having enough and bugging in don't add up for me at the moment, the danger, the legality, the space, every fuel source has it's disadvantages for a terraced house owner with no garden and a lean to shed.
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

Ye I mite get to work on making a sheltered area just outside the caravan. The gas will do inside for now until I decide what I am gona do. I am also going to do a bit of research on some sort of outside oven for baking bread ect. So maybe it could sit beside the woodburner under the shelter

You can make an excellent bread oven/pie warmer by making a "flue oven" (basically, a large steel/tin box that is inline with the flue, then another inside (imagine a doughnut with the achull dough being the flue) stick on a door & a backplate & bob's yer uncle!)

Ye I like the look of that. I have started making a shelter at the side of the caravan. I will put the burner under it and may attempt to make one of them flue ovens.
