Car Kit

Post by kentnewts »

Hi,

Just out of interest seems the winter months are drawing closer, what do people recommend as a minimum keeping in the car?

So far i've got:
5 ltr water
blanket
fleece
waterproof jacket
torch
gerber multi tool
med kit
break down kit (jump leads, hi-vis, puncture kit, spare fuses/bulbs etc)
folding military shovel

any thoughts much appreciated!! :)

You might want to add some food to that.

I have

Full face Respirator (you never know)
Army issue Cammo HazMat jacket and trousers (£15 Amazon!!!)
Knife
Torch
Med-kit
Rigger Boots
Seven Oceans Emergency Food Ration Liferaft Survival Biscuits (Amazon)
Sweets
2 ltrs water (planning for more)
Survival shelter
Thermal hat
Thermal hard wearing gloves
Lighters
Monocular x40 magnification
Fishing line and hooks.
Rock salt
Loo Roll
Fire Extinguisher

I'm sure there is more in there. Most of this is packed into a grab bag.

In the 2010 snow, I got stuck about 5 miles from home, and only had a warm jacket in the car.
5 hours trudging through the snow with leather shoes and cotton trousers was not fun.
Been there, done that, NOT AGAIN!!!

Bearing in mind the problems on the M11 where people were snowed in their cars overnight, I also added the following to my car kit in addition to the usual things like hats, trainers, water etc:

blanket
emergency (tin foil) blanket
fold up shovel
hexamine stove
pan
KFS
metal mug
candles (light and heat)
wind up torch
hot chocolate sachets
beanfeast sachets
cat litter

I reckon Kentnewt's:-
5 ltr water
blanket
fleece
waterproof jacket
torch
gerber multi tool
med kit
break down kit (jump leads, hi-vis, puncture kit, spare fuses/bulbs etc)
folding military shovel

Covers the basics

I think if forced to go further afield in dodgy weather I'd bung in a bug out or (winter)every day carry bag, I don't keep much in the car, but then it's rare I'm more than 10 miles from home, and could walk back inside a couple or three hours even in the worst of weather, the RAC membership is possibly the best car prep we've got though, and in Plymouth cars and snow don't go well together, 2 or 3 flakes and it's total gridlock, being prepped enough to not have to use the car at all in dodgy weather is another good prep, and the biggest advantage to living a stones throw from the city center, of course the dissadvantages add up pretty quick should SHTF though :(
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

Can't agree more! I wasn't born down here, I come from the frozen North  and it amazed me at the first sign of snow, driving standards in Plymouth just seemed to go out of the window! Wether or not the snow was laying on the roads.

Living near the English Riviera  snow isn't really at the forefront of my mind, come winter. However, we did have a really bad situation with ice a couple of years ago, Plymtom might remember?

My winter car kit isn't a huge amount different from any other time of year. I keep plenty of water in the car - anywhere between 2 and 14 litres for personal consumption and another 10 for emergency vehicle 'thirst', I drive a Landrover :D

Apart from that everything else, other than toolkit is kept/contained within a Snugpak Response Pack which sits under the passenger front seat, accessible from the back.

I'm not often much further away from home, than at work, about 12 miles, so it's contents reflect that.
Esbit Stove, can provide a link if needs be, but it's stove with a separate cooking pot. Fuel for the stove. Food sachet - pasta shells with sauce. Energy bar x2. Cyclumes x2. Fire lighting kit. Small FAk. Water purification tablets. Small amount of cash in notes. Brew kit (my own, not MOD). Monocular, but have binos in the car too.

That's pretty much it. I can walk 12 miles in what I'm wearing, in most weathers so its not really a get home pack, more of a comfort pack.
