Hidden store ?

Post by scotsman »

So where do others keep there SHTF preps ?

cant post pictures of mine yet as i still need to create access to it but while i was under the floor laying a cable i noticed a void under a cupboard in the hall after lifting the old lino that was down i discovered someone at sometime had removed three floor boards and created a hatch.

So off i go down into this void and to my surprise its lower than the rest of the house the trap door in the living room you need to crawl on your belly but this one i can move with ease even more strange is cupboard is around 6 feet in length but this void under it extends another 7 feet beyond the above ground cupboard and with an added twist i would be able to stand up inside the void bellow and behind the cupboard up stairs

I was planning on using it as a cold store for tins ect + food preps i put a thermometer in there and it reached a low of 12c however the humidity is around 70% so that could be an issue if things are not sealed or stored correct im not really sure

my reasons for this are as follows

space is limited in the house
Its out of sight there is no way of knowing its there i didnt and have been under the floor lots of times laying cctv cables ect
its cold

I`l pist some pictures later today

Ps no sure if this is the right area for this thread so mods go easy on me i`m still wet behind the ears

What is your reason for questioning why he wants to hide it?

as promised some pictures

if you look behind the green box thats where i assumed the void under the floor ended however after a look it was clear it went back further
Image

showing the hatch that was there allready for some unkown reason after i made it a little bigger
Image

the bricks you see at the bottom of the image are those at the base of the same wall in the first pic ( behind green box and above ground )
Image

the biggest shock was the height in this little room, i can stand up in there with ease and i am around 5.8 give or take
Image

I have been thinking about buying in some flat pack plastic shelfs and turning this little under ground cubbie into a storage space for either food or other supplys non perishable ect

Scotsman my house is on a steep hill, and on the down-side you can walk around in the foundations easily, there's 5-6ft of clearance. If we were younger I'd use that space and put in a ladder under the floor hatch, its very dry down there.

That's certainly some useful space! If you can get some racking down there and the access is easy enough - happy days!

Good extra storage, I would love a space like that.

Lil. We are also build in a hill but we cannot access the foundations. It's such a waste of space. All it needed was a bit of extra thought when they build the house and we would have had a lovely cool storage area. Oh well.

I'm jealous! I would love the have a space like that. Better yet a full on cellar is my dream, are there companies about that will dig one out for you?

Then again I can imagine it costs a bomb, I don't know of many houses with one pre-made either.

I would like a cellar but the people in the flat below might object.
