Hi all,
I wasn't sure where to post this (maybe we should have a Prepper News section?).
I get extreme weather alerts from all over the world, most of them not relevent to me.
But today's email was about solar flares !
3-day Solar-Geophysical Forecast issued Oct 23 22:00 UTC
Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be moderate to high with occasional M-class events, and a slight chance for an isolated X-class event for the next three days (24 - 26 Oct) with Region 1598 the most likely source.
NASA reports that the sun emitted a significant X1.8 solar flare on Monday this week from an active region that has been numbered AR 1598.
--
NASA says harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground, however -- when intense enough -- they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel. This can disrupt radio signals for anywhere from minutes to hours.
The same sunspot produced three strong flares before this one in just the two days since it became visible from Earth's perspective.
"This means more flares are probably in the offing, and they will become increasingly Earth-directed as the sunspot turns toward our planet in the days ahead," astronomer Tony Phillips wrote on Spaceweather.com.

I knew I should have started that faraday cage sooner ! I have all my radios etc in quality street tins wrapped in tin foil. Will that be enough?
All the best,

Re: Solar Flare Warning
Probably yes, but for insurance pop them in a microwave (a microwave is a faraday cage).everyday-carry wrote:..I knew I should have started that faraday cage sooner ! I have all my radios etc in quality street tins wrapped in tin foil. Will that be enough?
Re: Solar Flare Warning
Yep, just tried it put my mobile phone in the microwave and tried to call it.
Re: Solar Flare Warning
Might be a silly question, if you had a big wire mesh cage with a door on it and put your car in it, would this protect the electronics?

oh i see , your not supposed to turn the microwave on with the mobile in it then ????? bugger.
Re: Solar Flare Warning
yes if you covered the floor with mesh, however cars are fairly good fariday cages as it stand as it is as they are already a big conductive cage.mole hill wrote:Might be a silly question, if you had a big wire mesh cage with a door on it and put your car in it, would this protect the electronics?

I remember seeing a program a few years ago where they simulated lightning strikes on a car by parking it under HV pylons. There were people in the car, which was struck several times by massive electical bolts - no harm done and they drove the car away. I think that proves your point
Cheers

Your car is a Faraday cage. Did you see the Top Gear program when the put a car under an artificial lightning bolt. The car and all electronic equipment within the car worked perfectly.
Re: Solar Flare Warning
Strictly speaking a lightning bolt is a different animal from an EM pulse, and although the metal roof and panels of a car might give protection against EMP's, the glass windows wouldn't, and the pulse could get in that way.
Check out this clip where an EM pulse blows out car ignitions at 2 minutes, proving the car gives no protection-
