Tool kit/bag

Post by ctrljay »

Has anyone put together a tool kit/bag for a SHTF senario.

I have lots of tools, but what it the absolute minimal tools i should have in my toolbox? eg saw/hammer

I torn by all the nice tools I have, but realistically i can't take them all with me, I could always trade the weight of a non prepper beliver in the family(wife!) for more

tools!!!!

I do plan to bug in but if the unthinkable happens i have to cover both bases!

Just to clarify, are you asking what the minimum tool store you should have in your vehicle in the event of a vehicle based bug out?

I have to admit  I keep a Machine Mart catalogue in the bathroom, for those times when an extended visit to the loo occurs - tool porn

It's kind of an impossible question to answer, in my view. I know an American prepper whose outboard motor failed on him at a very inconvenient time and managed to fix it with a Leatherman.

It's difficult to suggest stuff, because, in the above example, my American friend knows his way around engines etc so had an advantage from the start.

If you are bugging out by vehicle and want a car tool kit beyond the originally supplied one then its perhaps good research to to find out what the most likely weak points of your vehicle are, and then make decisions based on that. If your vehicle has renowned head gasket problems then your not going to be able to fix that, at the side of the road with a hammer

Well, if you're looking to take to the trees then perhaps you need to be looking at bushcraft tools eg machete, axe, mallet - that sort of thing. You'll hardly need a screwdriver in the woods!

Have a look here for some ideas

If I could carry it in the car without it being in the way, and with living in the woods in mind.

Bow saw
Axe
Machette
Spade

Other things came to mind but many I carry all the time, and bearing in mind if anything else I was taking with me requires tools to maintain, then they would be in the kit too.

You say that, but you could use a screwdriver for, a temporary tent peg, or stoke a fire, or as a general spike purpose, in defense of a wild animal attack!

When at work most of us (electricians) had a largish flathead screwdriver which we called our wrecking screwdriver, to use much like a chisel or cold chisel to make holes in walls, ceilings, behind skirting boards, and often found other uses for a pair of side cutters.
My dad was a butcher, and it was strange to me how he found other uses for his cleaver in particular.

I have put together a simple tool kit to assist me if TSHTF.
I am a mechanic therefore my tool kit will be quite different from yours. Mine is mainly for mechanical use. All the tools live in my INCH Bag.
Small 3/8 socket set
Multi tip screwdriver
Mole Grips
Dog clips
2mts of twin core wire
Duck tape
Rubber tape
Epoxy resin
6” adjustable spanner
Micro screw driver set
Junior hack saw
Blow torch/ solder kit
