Saying Hiya

Post by elvengate »

Hi All,

Just wanted to say hello. I am glad I found this forum. I love the rules, since they really make good sense. I am a yank in the UK and a down home country boy.

I believe that our societies have lost thier way in terms os sensible prepping. Our grandparents who lived through WWII and rationing would understood that everyone needs to prep to a certain degree. As the citizens of NY City are unfortunatly learning the hard way.

We live in a world where bad things happen once in a while. I hope to share my knowledge with you all and learn new things here also.

Thanks

Hi All,

Thank you for the welcome.

Arzosah - Pretty open ended question, so not sure what type of answer you may be looking for.

If you ask what are the current strength and weakness's in terms of prep. I believe we are in a sensible median. There are limits here in the UK that many in the U.S. do not face. The population is pretty condensed here in relation to the land mass available. So Bugging out is a difficult proposition and due to the dense population Bugging-in can get difficult with civil unrest.

So what is the answer? For me it is "Common Sense"

We have bags that we take with us when we day-hike, leave town or such. Why? Autos break-down, Storms happen, trains get canceled. So we have a sensible and easy to carry bag with things that would be useful for a few days. A fleece blanket, socks, some food, compass... and such.

We do have backpacks and are avid hikers and campers so we do have what we would need to tuck away if the woods if need be. This is part of what I would call Sensible Moderate Prep.

No bunkers in the back garden. No Hummer in parked in front of the house.

When we shop we do as my family always has in the past. If you need rice you buy a 10kg bag and keep it well in your cupboard. You don't wait until you a fully out of something before you go buy more. Take advantage of sales when you can. Remember the lessons of our grandparents and how people managed during difficult times. (Something many unfortunate NY City citizens had forgotten and are having to deal with the results of that)

I'll use the past Swine Flu situation as an example. The strategy was that if someone in your house caught it, you would be advised to all stay in your house. The NHS would deliver meds to your family and if need be deliver food. So the question I ask is simple. What if the people that are supposed to deliver food get sick? So have a sensibly stocked food supply in your house to see those in your house through a foreseeable time period. It goes the same with most prep. A little prep to weather emergencies that are likely will get you a long way down the road towards managing most risks.

Can we prepare for a meteor strike, Nuclear War, Economic Collapse or such? Very few of us can gear-up for that. What we CAN do is think about possibilities. Remember or study older ways of doing things. Can you cook over an open fire? Can you use an axe? Can you prepare pidgeon or rabbit for cooking? Can you plant and produce veg on your own?

Then we need to accept that we as humans a social creatures. At some point we must band together to survive. Yes there are bad people in the world and many people can be dangerous when they are afraid. Yet at some point we have to band together and cooperate to survive the big stuff. So what do you do to prep for that? Just think. It is that easy. Think about how that can be achieved and what can be done to make the group better off. If more of us do this then taking care of the big stuff will be easier. We have precedent on our side. Look at what our grandparents achieved during WWII. The government didn't make society band together and weather the storm. The people of this country did it for the greater good. It is a natural state that can be fostered. Yes it is fragile and can breakdown. Yet like anything positive it take work. It is easier to steal than harvest your own food. Yet the majority of us would forgo a meal and give it to a child when to situation calls for it.

I know this is long winded, yet I have been asked and am sharing the way I look at things.

I served 20yrs as an Airborne Infantryman in the U.S. Army and have been around a bit. I have seen the worst and the best of humanity. I am more jaded than most. The one thing I am more than anything is a person that evaluates everything in life based upon what I see. I do not jump to conclusions. I take people at face value. Yes I have seen active service and am a very capable person. So I guess I am in a better position than many.

So what is my answer in short? We are prepared for whatever life has to throw at us and think about ways to be prepared better as part of our daily life. Nothing has changed in that. I'm a down home country boy from the States. That's the way most country people think. Blizzards, Floods, Droughts, Power outages and many other bad thing happen all the time. So we lived in a state or sensible prep as the norm, just like the generations before us have. To bad that in recent times many people have forgotten this. So best find friends and family that can remember that the real world has never been a nice place.

Ok

The ranting of a madman is at an end.
