chicken of the woods advice please

Post by junmist »

As I was driving along a road I drove pass an oak tree and saw what looks like some chicken of the woods growing quit high up on it. Question to those of you who know their fungi is there any other fungi that looks like chicken of the woods, and if it is does this fungi always grow back at the same place. I thought that tomorrow I would stop and have a proper look :D

I'd look on youtube, hugh FW and Jamie Oliver have featured both foraging and cooking it, you should recognise it from that, as for others like it, I dont think theres much looks simular.
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

If it is growing on an oak tree, then it is chicken of the woods( sulphur polypore) we have a lot of oak round here, and this fungus is not uncommon. It is certainly one I eat when I find it.
Another place I have found chicken of the woods is in our local church yard, as they grow on Yew trees too!
The photos Tigs put up are very good- study them well, but if you have the right tree you have the right Bracket Fungus.
