I will be getting some more batteries and flash lights this week and charging up my camping battery more regularly and starting to keep some jars that could be used as hurricane jars on the cheap, I am also getting my dental work done and adding more dental supplies to my kit.

I have been watching the Sandy situation with interest mostly on abc local news as it is interesting to note what people are short of etc and gloves, mask and bleach and cleaning products seem to be paramount with heat , gas and food.

As for Christmas wish list

I want a hunting knife and a dutch oven with stand, how un girly is that? :D

spent £45 on just preps for the stores - was such a nice feeling to be able to just add to the stores instead of thinking about "what do I need this week".

Its all still a bit new for me,

have made plans with a friend with access to private woodland to go out and test out all the kit i have one weekend.

i have also got my Wife interested as she says "i'd rather you were doing this than building bikes or skateboards", so as i have a week off we are going to spend most of friday making fire without matches, trying out my new Crusader cook system and making a meths stove out of drink cans.

Should be fun, i'm interested to see how well the lint from the tumble dryer will take a spark, we have been bagging it up instead of throwing it out, i have a big zip-lock bag of it already.

what a good idea if it works (the lint), maybe they will let you bury a emergency box in the woodland if you ask?

I have some cotton wool balls soaked in vaseline that I have yet to try out

This week I'm going to start sorting out a cupboard just for stores, there is junk and tools in there at the moment, but it is such a perfect temperature I think it is better suited as a large larder.

Hi Hobo

I got the same offer from my neighbour last winter. You'll find that they catch and burn very quickly, no good for main fuel but excellent as kindling to get the fire going. I've still got loads left to see me through this winter as well.

When you have a woodburner you can almost smell scrap wood going begging!

Yep! It's also nice to know that you can always find something to make a meal with in the cupboards when it's sleeting and blowing a gale outside and you really don't want to leave the house!

- bought a tenner's worth of first aid stuff on a*azon, including steristrips, finally.
- ta-da! When I did my normal monthly backup of my laptop onto my external hard drive, I used the hard drive to transfer everything to an old laptop that I've just been keeping in a cupboard. And I've just wrapped it up, first with cloth as recommended, and then three layers of heavy duty aluminium foil! Not for an EMP *weapon*, but for any coronal mass discharge - its now safely tucked away, total cost £2.55 for the foil.
- got some 5 litre water bottles, cleaned them and packed them away safely - they don't have water in, they're just stored safely
