0.77 or 0.22

Post by purplemick »

I am looking at buying another tool, this time my wife wants one..!!
Fantastic, but she is insistent about size....i.e. it has to be .22 and I am trying to sell the idea of a .77 (bearing in mind the velocity difference)..advice from experienced peeps most welcome (p.s. we have a budget of one thousand poundsish for two rifles)

yea....177,I know little about them but am learning more as I think they could be jolly usefull.....along with a bow and arrow and a lot of practice :)
12ft/lbs of energy or fac?......dont know what that means....sorry  .....I was looking at feet per second as a guide line.

The legal limit for an air rifle is 12 ft lbs. This is a measure of the energy produced by the pellet as it leaves the barrel and should be listed on all rifles for sale. Any rifle with more power than this requires an FAC (Fire Arms Certificate) from your local police as it would be legally considered a firearm, not an air rifle. 12 ft lbs (or less) is normally powerful enough for most purposes (plinking, target practice and some pest control) so you should probably just go for one of these as the process of getting an FAC just for an air rifle probably isn't worth it.

then you have to consider co2, pre charged pneumatic, gas ram or spring types as the power source.
spring is the most reliable in my opinion but everyone has their own favorites.
have a look at the weihrauch range or air arms range of rifles.
the tx200hc is one of my favorites.
you should go to a gun shop and try them with your wife, she may not get on with heavier guns or the balance of some of them.

hi, a .22 springer would be the way to go, less recoil about 600 fps, a .177 would be about 800fps but more recoil, if you go for a springer that is. i would not buy a co2 coz it would cost you as much in co2 as the tin of pellets cost you and they dont like the cold. saying that i do like the crossman rat cacher a very good little gun. airarms s200 is a very good gun but you will need a pump. i use crosman accupell found they are a good all round pellet, good at range and hit hard. im a big theoben fan but they have just gone bust, and your only get one for a grand anyway. go to a gun club and try them all im sure they will let you, find one that fits you. if you go for a precharged air gun a .22 will give you more shots per fill than a .177 will in the same gun. buy the best gun you can, as you can always upgrade your sight later, or buy a mod and dont buy second hand unless you know what your looking at. theoben made the first gas ram airguns, i am unsure who will repair them now. when you go to a club there is always someone that trys to sell you a gun, hold yourself back i know its hard. good luck. mitch66 ps any weihrauch airgun will last you a lifetime i have a hw35 in .22 with open sights its a little gem cost me £150 S/H

Hi Re - airgun calibre pros/cons with both

.177 advantage fast and flatter trajectory - less hold over/under to compansate for distances greater than zero. Disadvantages smaller fiddly pellets less hard hitting.

.22 my personal choice but I'm an old traditionalist like a chunky pellet - work hard at judging distances and training myself to adjust accordingly for me they seem to be harder hitting.

Check out chairgun pro (hawk-optics) for computing trajectories.

Own a BSA Lightning xl breakbarrel springer - compact light and relitivly cheap well within your budget. Try BSA owners group forum for 2nd hand sales.

Hope this help..... Tim

PS You MUST have landowners permission to be on land with an airrifle even unloaded regarded as armed tresspass - locked away for a long time if caught.

For the money you are looking to spend pre charged pneumatic all day long! You can always buy a cheap springer as a back up. :)
