SHOTGUNS

Post by scoobie »

Gun shops are a funny thing. Some are run by miserable b****** who have no time for anyone. Others are very helpful.

Find one you like and stick with it :)

I totally agree with this! I've dealt with many over the years with air guns. I've since got a shotgun and still use the trusty gun shop due to 'ignorant' times with certain others.

I'd recommend Greenfields in Salisbury, always helpful and actually know what they are talking about. No business association with them, just a satisfied repeat customer.

SHOTGUNS

My local one is friendly but always understaffed and generally overpriced. I usually just go there for ammo as that is fairly reasonable...

Interesting fact that may surprise some people when wondering about numbers of guns out there...... I have changed address so had a visit from the local firearms officer who said to me in Sussex alone there are over 27,000 licence holders with any amount from 1 to 12 guns !

That must be Kent Wool Growers you are talking about - under-staffed and overly expensive!

In fairness to this Ashford based outlet, I don't know of a gun shop in Kent that sells it's wares for what I consider is a fair price.

SHOTGUNS

All shotguns do exactly the same thing. The only differences are price and reliability. The less complicated the better. Semi autos you need to be looking at a higher end manufacturer. Benelli and Beretta make reliable ones. Pump actions are less complicated, look for Remington 870s. Side by sides and over and unders are ten a penny. You can find good solid guns for around a hundred pounds or less. I have a Baikal that was made a thousand years ago from old Russian tanks, it sees far more use than my Beretta and will outlast me, my daughters and granddaughters. It cost me ninety pounds or thereabouts.

In fact anyone who knows a bit about shotguns will tell you that Baikal make some of THE most durable shotguns available. The quality of materials used and build quality is up with the very best. The only area they are lacking in is looks.

I still have my old Baikal single barrel that my father bought me when I was 14.

Stay well away from the likes of Beretta, Benneli and Browning if you want a bargain. As with clothing, you pay a premium for a label. A Licoln or Lanber makes for a much better bargain buy. Even a Turkish made gun makes sense these days.

If you have the money then by all means go for a top shelf make but in most instances, a secondhand mint alternative makes a much wiser buy.

I use my fathers old AYA Yoeman side by side gun worth £200 tops. It does everything a Browning/Beretta does. These Spanish workhorses are much in demand by gamekeepers up and down the land. Another make worth looking for is Laurona.

If you look hard you will find good quality Spanish side by sides and Over and unders out there for £100.
