We all know that Prepping covers a wide range of topics and skills learned. One situation that bothers me is self defense. In the UK you are not allowed to carry any weapons, but I have found the proverbial loop hole.

This book(Which i purchased) covers guards, attacks and training exercises. It is an old volume but it is still relevant.AND it is perfectly legal to carry a walking stick/pole when out walking the dog or just having a walk. if you want to go the whole hog-

The above is the ultimate self defense stick.
There are plenty of videos on YouTube, showing how effective this method is, and it's legal. In normal everyday life it may just buy you the time to get back to your vehicle/home etc if caught in the open. Especially for the older ones among us, it may just give that little extra piece of mind.
Legal Self Defense.
Re: Legal Self Defense.
under british law unless you can prove you need to use a walking stick it can be looked on as going prepared ! i guess you could claim its a fashion statement but i don't know how that would go down especially as the cold steel one is designed as a weapon!

Re: Legal Self Defense.
My first instinct is to remind myself why in this country carrying weapons is discouraged, put simply if our laws were like the USA then our murder rates would be much higher (population wise ) than they have, why.. because we are more urban more arguementative etc, statistics prove that knife wounds need to be reduced and that many are caused when a knife intended for self defence comes into play, just like a gunslinger in the wild west could goad an oponent into action knowing all along he had the upper hand, so it is with many weapons, unless you know how and when to use one then you and (or I more to the point) are a hazard to yourself, I would be more inclined to learn some self defence techniques first than go out, armed with anything I did not need to use as a tool.
That said there could come a point in the future when it would swing more toward necessity to have a defensive weapon, then a stick may well fit the bill.

I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.
Re: Legal Self Defense.
Sounds like an idea in principal however as I understand it, an item ( outside of the specifically banned items such as larger knives and guns etc ) only becomes an offensive weapon if used offensively and if the Police can prove you used or carried it for offensively purposes. The onus is on the Police to find and present this proof, we are deemed innocent until they can do this so.... Carrying a bonifide walking stick for fashion or just because you like the colour or as a walking aid is fine and so long as it is not used offensively then even when approached by they Police they have no option but to accept our reason for having it. But, the cold steel walking stick is marketed as a weapon and therefore would be seen as having a single purpose and if you had a determined officer who spotted it and was willing to sift through your bank account for a receipt for the stick then you would be up that stream with zero means of propulsion!!!
Keep in mind though there are many items to hand that need zero expenditure and take little training to use. A key held firmly between the fingers within your fist is effective if you are attacked. Search online as i would not like to be seen as promoting this but any self defence class would go through this one. Keep in mind that it takes less force than a thrown bag of sugar to take the knee joint out so along with many number of effective targets should be an addition to your list. If they can't walk then they can't chase after you.
And remember the number one self defence promoted by Mr Miyagi himself, " best defense is no be there!" So if you can run then run! I tend to think that if someone is prepared to have a go at you then they properly believe they can take you and might well be right! Using self defense techniques is always a last defense for me but its best to prep and know what you can do and what you can use legally.

like the blind man that was stunned by the police because he had a white stick some times the police dont have to prove anything until after they have acted

Re: Legal Self Defense.
Offensive weapons are classed as Made, Adapted, Intended.
For example:
A Made weapon: Knife, firearm, knuckle duster or anything that is designed to cause harm.
An Adapted : Baseball bat / pickaxe handle / bit of 4x2 (with long nails in one end), toothbrush with a razor blade grafted into it. Could be
weapon anything that has been modified to cause harm.
An Intended : Walking stick, steel toecap boots, broken glass bottle / pint glass, a set of keys. It is anything that an individual intends to use
weapon as a weapon, but the Police have to prove the intent to use it as such.
There is also Section 139 (articles with points or blades).
Hope this will be of help.

Re: Legal Self Defense.
In The book I had mentioned emphasis is on speed, so an Aluminium walking pole is sufficient. However the chances of a local bobby knowing that the coldsteel stick is a self defense implement are pretty low, half of them don't even Know Road traffic regs.
I would rather take a chance on getting pulled by Police than stabbed by a couple of neds. The Police however don't tend to bother normal law abiding people going about their business, they are too busy dealing with the Modern broken Society we live in.

You need one of these - http://ejmas.com/jwma/articles/2001/jwm ... y_0501.htm
"Upon this remark the Spanish unscrewed the head from a Halbered to create a makeshift Quarterstaff. Armed with the weapon of his choice Peeke stood ready to meet his next challenger. However the Spanish were clearly no longer so confident in the prowess of their soldiers for, to Peeke's consternation, two Swordsmen stepped forward to fight him. Peeke sarcastically asked if more would like to join them. The Duke of Medyna asked how many he desired to fight.
"Any number under sixe". replied Peeke.
The Duke smiled scornfully and beckoned a third man to join the original two. Peeke and the rapier men warily traversed each other, all the while thrusting and warding, till finally Peeke gambled on an all out attack. His first blow a left one of his adversaries dead and his subsequent blows left the other two injured and disarmed. No doubt they also left the spanish seriously questioning the wisdom of their invasion plans. Peeke's feat so impressed his Spanish captors that they released him and granted him safe conduct to England."
