Bought quite a number of packets of runner bean seeds of three different types. I intend to place them in a mason jar, desiccate them down to about 6% moisture content with silica gel, and then put them in the freezer. Stored this way the seeds will keep practically indefinitely and I will have a store of runner bean seeds available for future years if veggie seeds become hard to obtain. In the event of a freezer failure, the seeds will still be viable in the sealed mason jar at warmer temperatures - just not as long (decades instead of tens of decades),
Both the silica gel and a simple reptile hygrometer (to indicate the moisture content) are available on ebay for a few pounds.

Oooh this did make me laugh too!preppingsu wrote:SooBee wrote:Preps this week are all Christmas related...a good excuse to buy a bit extra and no-one will notice.
Soobeebit like me. My OH phoned from work this morning and asked was there anything we needed as he could pop to the supermarket on his way home later. I nearly choked on my cuppa. Has he seen the spare room/store cupboard recently....
My husband also asks me at least twice a week, on the way in, if we need anything. Even if we don't I always say something off-the-cuff to add to the stores. It usually involves nuts or alcohol (great for bartering and long lasting).
Recent preps - As well as a few more items in and rotating some items out, of the store, I have been making much more progress on involving my immediate family. I feel that getting people on-side is my next key step. Since there has been a lot on the news about flooding, travel problems, etc, I have had more opportunity to talk about what we might do ISHTF. It is working. It's a great feeling when you get a little more support for prepping. No doubt a few others here are experiencing this same thing recently too.
Merry Christmas...

Merry Christmas...
When I first started prepping my OH used to laugh at me and think it was a silly idea. Since then I hate to think of the amount of times she has asked "have you got any ******** in your prepping boxes".
Just today it's happened twice - paracetamol and tin foil ( no
I also have the alcohol downstairs. It will probably never get drunk in this house but someone, somewhere may REALLY want it?

Re: What Preps are you doing this week
Just bought myself a bit more gold.
I like having it but I don't enjoy the process of buying it. The price moves pretty much contstantly and knowing when to jump in, for an amateur can be quite stressful. The price of the sized bar I was interested in dropped at about 2.00pm this afternoon but I waited, hoping it would drop further. It didn't but increased and then fluctuated above the 2.00pm price. I've watched the price all this time and bought at the 2.00pm price about 30 mins ago - and people say I have no patience

Re: What Preps are you doing this week
went on ebay and bought my first flint sparky fire lighting thingy. Going to make (out of jute rope and candle wax) some fire lighting candles that are supposed to light up nicely with the sparks from one of those magnesium Swedish fire steel flint thingumyjiggies.

Huntsman can i ask where and who with you did your butchery course withHuntsman wrote:Hello Everyone, I haven't posted in a while... I've been lurking quite a bit though!
I have been prepping away as usual, and I've learnt a few abknew skills in the past few months.
I have been on an urban survival course, been learning about reloading ammunition, Re-done my BASC carcass inspection and butchery course (always good to refresh your knowledge once in a while eh?) and a most fascinating food preservation course.
On the storing side of things I have recently purchased:
1 months worth of mountain house freeze dried food
300x 308. Rounds
30 crossbow bolts
2 new gas mask filters
Plenty of tins (vegatables, meats etc)
Aside from that I have setup an additional rain collection system and moved a cord of logs.
Re: What Preps are you doing this week
Have just taken a reasonable and not very costly Tesco delivery, the bulk of which is tins of the everyday value stuff that has a reasonable shelf life.
Just because we are through Christmas doesn't mean that we will get through January or February without ice and snow, so I thought I'd make sure that I had stuff in in case I couldn't be arsed to travel to the shops on the ice.
As I live up a hill, carrying back stuff can be a bugger and I do remember some winters many years ago when buses went sideways in the hilly part of the Chilterns where I used to live.
