island prepper
hi all, i live on an island off the north coast of scotland, i have been prepping for a while but mainly for the winters but now i am starting to prep for the longer term, i have just completed 22 years in the army so i have learned a few skills there. i am trying to turn my home into a place where if we loose power we can survive indefinataly, we already use a cess pit for sewage, and draw our water from a well (with an electric pump), i am trying to find a hand pump which will pull the water 350meters and to a height of about 8meters any suggestions gratefully accepted.. i hope to be an active member of the site and contribute positivly where possible

Re: island prepper
Greetings island prepper have you though of a windmill water pump you'll need a tank or reservoiur check out this vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bh4n6QzX9S0 about 10.20 mins in.
If you are making your own a vertical windmill is much simpler.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UPe6A_UVPc
If you are on a hill pump water up hill store in reservouir then release down pipe vis micro hydro turbine much more efficient then wind for electric gen
Hope that helps

Being that you're up the Scotland way, you might also want to consider rain trapping as a viable suplement to your well. In the non-winter months, I presume you get more than your fair share of rain as it is? Might as well tap it from above as well as below
I trap rain water here (it's cleaner than the water from the taps anyway, and doesn't contain all the pesticides, herbicides and lime). I use a LifeSaver purification bottle (and in the house the Jerrycan version) to make that water 100% safe to drink (don't even need to boil it). Best part: works out over 10,000x cheaper than paying Anglian Water for the crap they're pumping through out taps!
