Recommend a good info medical resource

Post by Hamster82 »

Hi all,

im fairly new here but been lurking for a while.

Im reasonably comfortable with most areas of my preps however medicine is definately my weak spot.

Im first aid trained though only to a basic level and i am looking for either online resources or preferably books that can help me get my head arround diagnosing and treating common but moderate/serious medical problems.

I am looking to build up a supply of antibiotics (currently looking at fish antibiotics as a viable source for emergencies) along with the painkillers and other medical supplies i already have but would like to better understand not only what each should be used for but also how to recognise the symptons and then select the correct med.

Im not looking to become a field doctor and fully expect this to be a long leanring process but if it can help when SHTF im all for it.

All the best, Hamster

I found a book aimed at survival and wilderness stuff last night while looking for another book mentioned on here by preppingsu, it was on amazon.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wilderness-Surv ... 1466224207

Is that the sort of thing you are looking at?

hello there.

tricky one this.

the only meds you are likely to have access to are mild analgesics and other items that can be purchased over the counter.

im assuming the antibiotics are 'wide-spectrum' so will be likely to cover most issues on a basic scale, but will still affect people with allergies!!

could suggest more in-depth first aid courses, maybe up to first responder if can do that? would an employer be willing to make you their appointed first aider maybe? or via TA and/or scouts? join red cross or st johns for added first aid skills and practise.

www.medicines.org.uk will give you a good explaination on uses and more importantly, dangers of medicines.

there are courses based at health assessment but these are usually continued professional development for qualified nurses etc

what assessment tools do you have?

thermometer and urinalysis strips are very good for spotting infections.

can get other things on 'net for more indepth assessment - but then like you say its what to do with the info when have it.

having fluids, paracetamol and good access to nutrients and vitamins (vit C and zinc etc) may be just as important, if not more so, than antibiotics IMO, in some cases, if not most...

Not sure it will cover the medicine side to the levels i want however does look a very interesting read and good research in general (i think a copy will be finding its way into my library ;) )

Hi Essgee,

I take your point and unfortunately work dont like the idea of spending out any money and im not in a position to put myself through a more advanced course at the moment.

Assessment tool wise i currently only have a thermometer but am looking into others.

The antibiotics im considering are penecillin, amoxicillin and metronidazole which seem to cover a fair range of infections and ive come to terms that i will never be able to cover every potentail illness.
Im focussing on internal bactrerial infections from food/water, UTI's and infected cuts etc... as feel these are likely to be the most common.

Im hoping i can find resources to help identify the type of infection, to a degree, and then another to determine what to treat it with.

Allergies wise im aware of any potential problems with me and mine though as you say you dont know when it comes to others.
I have a good stock of paracetamol but am a bit lacking on the vitiamins which i will need to look into.

Perhaps another way to consider is the more natural/herbal type remedies. Things you can grow in your own garden and you are then not reliant on manufactured drugs.

No probs, my wish list on amazon has 75 books on it. I'm slowly getting there and my library is increasing which feels good.
