FOOD STORAGE
Re: FOOD STORAGE
Hello Paul,
Good start to the water supply, dont forget ways to store and purify other water though.
The mantra is "Store what you eat, eat what you store"
I would suggest buying small amounts of all types of food, dried, freeze dried, dehydrated, tinned Army Rations etc and trying them all, then you can make an informed choice.
As for weapons, (Mods please delete if not correct) this is fround apon due to intent before the act and this Forum cannot endorse any such action.
Cup a Soups if kept dry; last centuries

Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

I store food in a range of ways - tinned, home made jams and chutneys, dried, dehydrated, seeds, and in the ground (at the allotment).
Itsy just did a group buy of mylar bags and oxygen absorbers. IMO, this is the best way to go for dried and dehydrated. The rule of thumb, as pseudonym says, is 'store what you eat, eat what you store'. My family are veggies and we love our grains and pulses, herbs and spices, add to that oil, tinned tomatoes and salt and we're good for hundreds of recipe options.
For water we have greywater, straight from the roof into water butts (for washing, watering) and stored in containers for drinking. You might think about water purification tablets or a purification device like a Lifesaver http://www.lifesaversystems.com
First aid kit and knowledge - I do a day's refresher course every year.
I prefer to use a woodgas or rocket stove so I don't have to rely on gas bottles being available - have a look at http://wildstoves.co.uk/ for some ideas.
We keep our BOBs by the door and have actually had to use them once!
I concur with pseudonym's advice not to talk about weapons.
Have a think about what's most likely to happen in your life and prep for that. I'm food prepping in case of illness or loss of income and as a hedge against inflation, for instance.
Hope this is useful.
Happy New Year!

Re: FOOD STORAGE
I own a crossbow (for target shooting, see this post: viewtopic.php?f=38&t=5966 ) and they're great to have around. That's all I'll say on that topic, obvious reasons.
On a self defense note, I've just purchased a completely UK legal 'Self Defense Spray' found here: http://www.niton999.co.uk/shop/product_ ... CP018.html
The above is used by doormen and was advised by one of my friends who's had previous experience using it on the drunks. It's only a small canister, but apparently it stings, stinks and has invisible UV which lasts for 3 days so attackers can be ID'd.
I'd advise looking into other defense sprays, for example StoppaRed and Defense ID. I will say, that check the sizes of the product as they can appear larger on the website than their actual size. Might be worth getting a holster too, makes carrying easier.
That's my 2p.
Well done in taking the first step to prepping!
