ive bought a primus igniter from camping shop .... i take it i use the flint striker against the sollid tubular bit... thus creating hopefully spark , though not managed it yet , also bought windproof matches

Do you have a link that shows this piece of kit?

If it's anything like the Light My Fire Ferro Rod, then yeah, scrape the striker along the rod to get sparks. It should have a black coating on the rod - this needs to be scraped of the part of the rod you intend to strike along before it will generate sparks. It can take a bit of practice, but keep trying and you will get it.

A common mistake when using ferro rods is to hold the rod close to the tinder and strike downwards towards the tinder, the better way is to hold the striker close to the tinder and draw the ferro rod backwards towards yourself, that way you won't accidently hit your tinder and send it flying
