Bilbo wrote:I bought one :) love it! very powerful for a pistol crossbow, been setting up targets in the garage for now i got the thick foam target sheet does the job. I also bought the 175# jaguar camo crossbow for £100 from blades & bows, haven't strung it yet but its a beast. Just need to find somewhere safe to shoot it. I'll upload a pic soon as i can.
Will you be modifying your pistol bow? I've fitted a sling on mine since this post. I should update it one day.

As for the 175lb'er, if you think you've got enough wood/plasterboard to fire it, add some more. They're beasts.

Anyone mind if I ask some questions? Hope not!

I've just linked the OH half to this. OH is of the opinion that it's not got enough range to take rabbits. I don't know. What do you guys think? My hands are ... dodgy! I can handle recoil - I expect it, so I'm fine with it. But since I've just said I want one of these for rabbit, it might be an idea to find out if they'll take rabbit!

(The rabbit here are right cheeky gits. They either run amongst the sheep and sit there thumbing their noses, cos they know you can't touch them there, or they sit out sunning themselves and let you get to within 20ft of em before vanishing down a handy hole.)

An Air rifle is much more useful taking rabbits

Has anyone actually tried using one of this little Xbows against a piece of meat maybe a joint of gammon with one, two or three layers of clothing wrapped around it. Say a tee shirt, sweat shirt and an outdoors jacket? Just to see if it would be effective ;)

It's on the list, just as soon as I research the best kind to buy and then sell enough stock to cover the cost!

I did a lot of research into piston crossbows and according to most (who have tested more than one) the one i have which goes under several different names:

Tomcat MK2 - Self Cocking
Cobra MK2 - Self Cocking
Lightening MK2 - Self Cocking

It comes in wood/black color.

You DO NOT want the MK1, due to flawed safety features, for example the safety on the MK1 was very temperamental. No one wants a bolt to the foot.

Depending on budget, spare limb tips and strings advised. Along with rail wax, but vaseline will suffice if you've got it around the house.

Hope this has helped a little.

Cheers Toddie, much appreciated.

I'd still like one, even if I'm not allowed to hunt with it - guess I'll just have to get an air rifle for that!

Hi,

I've only fired the 80# so far and seeing how powerful that is I haven't even strung the 175# yet..
From firing the pistol crossbow i'm extremely confident of it being a good personal defense wpn in a total shtf scenario, quick to cock portable quite light darts are very cheap (£3 for 10) the plastic ones are extremely durable, and i'm sure it would be "lethal".

I'll be taking the 175 beast up to the caravan and i'll be shooting it at foam and fill bag targets with a sand backdrop see how it goes :)

Doing the homework is as usual the important aspect of getting any kit, if I buy it will it do what I want it to do almost everytime I want to do it, or is it likely to fail me at my time of need.

My homework has led me to the belief that a pistol crossbow is not going to be good for hunting or for defensive use against man nor beast. However, if I wanted to have something for a bit of fun and to not be taken seriously then I would probably buy one, after all I bought a couple of .177 co2 air pistols a while back which are good fun and a real test of shooting skills to get them to hit the target, but that is all they are good for, for hunting small game I use a 12ft/lb Air,co2 rifle, much better at doing the job I want it to time after time with accuracy and ability. And as has been shown is quite capable of stopping much bigger things with a well placed shot at a sensible distance way beyond a few feet.

I also believe in better to have and not need than to need and not have, but when it comes to better to have it needs to work, otherwise you might as well not have.
