It really depends how you do it. every time I walk past a skip I have a look in, I tend to pull out the copper/metal as I make a lot of antennas and other things. Metal is not cheap, everything else is. You could make something like http://biolitestove.com/ for about £40 in parts.

yes mine as 8 12v Peltier coolers onboard that am making so its a tad harder to cool used a few pc coolers out of scrap pcs but around us you dont see many skips, if you put anything metal outside around the front of the house its gone in an hour or less as there are so many folks trying to get some money... have even seen one lass driving around collecting scap with a baby fastened to her.
but yes something thats not going to put out much would be cheaper, if you can get the heatsink.

unless you want to spend silly money look up TGM TEG TEC Seebeck Peltier Thermoelectric Generators on ebay. you will need good heat sinks "thick" also take the heated side away from the source with a bar same size as peltier or the wires will warm and fall out use a good heat cover on both wires...one side must stay cooler than the other at all times dont need vast amounts of heat to start working thay also work by cooling one side i.e ice snow warming the other so if you was to bring a section of alli bar thru your shed roof and attach it to the peltier. the cold outside and the heat inside your shed should work it to. you could bring cold from outside in winter with a bar in a barrel of water :tinfoil .
all the best on making your system
...if i post it this time and i have messed up the spelling sod it lol

Relatively slow moving air in low volume will not produce much energy, once you factor in the linkage to the dynamo and the dynamo, that's a lot of moving parts, and point of failure, factor in heat and soot you are going to have a lot of failures.

Interesting thought, would the contents of the flue gases not cause problems with it, especially dust, tar, creosote substances for example
