Re: Sparks and tinder kit.
We have just had our gas central heating replaced and the old boiler has one of them push button sparks on to light the pilot flame, its under a drift just now but when its cleared I thought I will remove the sparker and see if I can do something with that.
Re: Sparks and tinder kit.
Will probably only be any good for lighting gas on a camping gas cooker or similar because the spark is really quite small.northern bloke wrote:We have just had our gas central heating replaced and the old boiler has one of them push button sparks on to light the pilot flame, its under a drift just now but when its cleared I thought I will remove the sparker and see if I can do something with that.

If you get some cotton wool balls and split them in three then add to a poly bag suspended in boiling water they will absorb the vasaline, then take out one at a time and put them in small zip-lock bags until needed.

right, update (not that itll get read
)
have now tested the cotton wool pre soaked in vaseline - and one good spark and it caught - and lasted very well. cheers for that little advice 12mp82.
alcohol patch also took first spark and stayed lit nicely for a shorter time.
Ace - ive just been out collecting pine resin - easier said than done. think managed to get a (very nice scented) handful from around 2 dozen trees looked at.
will test this (and go collecting more) at later date.
found some nice dry pine twigs too - taken those for kindering/tindering/tinkering

Yeah, it can sometimes take a bit of work collecting it. Glad you got a decent amount for the testing of. It does smell nice, doesn't it?! Look forward to hearing how your tests went.essgee23 wrote:Ace - ive just been out collecting pine resin - easier said than done. think managed to get a (very nice scented) handful from around 2 dozen trees looked at.
What is said about fire, is that it warms you three times. Once when collecting the materials, once when preparing the materials, and the third time when burning the materials. (Heard Ray Mears say this one time)
Ace.
The future belongs to those who prepare.

Re: Sparks and tinder kit.
right - this kid does have some good videos, and obviously uses what he learns.
this is of cotton wool candle combo for fire starting.
the last vid i posted was supposed to show how to melt and store resin... but halfway through vid he managed to mess it up and do the same as me and seal it shut etc etc.
