;) With a sawing machine

Sorry, I shouldn't, but it was there so I did.

Please forgive me

I got a sewing machine at Christmas. Be prepared for a few hours swearing at it at first! Took me ages just to work out how to thread the damn thing. I can sew in a straight line now which pleases me immensely :) If you have an Ikea nearby, they sell fabric - they do a cheap cotton called Bomull at £1.75 a metre which is excellent for practicing on - it won't break the bank.

I sew too, and I prefer to make my own clothes, just because I can never find stuff I like in the shops. I've got an electric machine that my Mum gave me, and an almost 100yr old Singer, a present from a friend, that doesn't require power.

Current project is a proper greatcoat. I'm taking my time, because the fabric was REALLY expensive, but it'll last me years when it's done :)

Take your time, learn to tack, or baste as my American friends say, and double check everything, at least, before committing to sewing a seam. The simplest patterns for clothes are 'Kwiksew', which can be found very cheaply online. If you want to make your own pattern, cut it out of newspaper, then fasten it together until it's right. Take it apart, trace it onto brown paper before cutting your fabric. If I can help, give me a shout :)

I got a Toyota Super jeans sewing machine (I figured they make nice cars, probably make nice sewing machines) Apparently it can go through 12 layers of jeans and is a good beginners model, although I'm a long way off that so thanks for the advice. I quite like the idea of making something like the below image once I get some skills, lol. Use a UN Wool rich blanket and other recycled bits and bobs.

That bag looks fab! I think you'll get a lot of pleasure making it.

My machine is a Janome from John Lewis. Mechanical rather than computerised - less to break. My aunt is a sewer and recommended Janome because they're a good name in machines. I'd like to be able to make and alter clothes and make craft pieces that I could sell, like bags and purses. I'm a very long way off any of that though! I tried making a dress a couple of weeks ago (like you do when you jump ahead of yourself) and it was an unmitigated disaster. Back to purses I think. At least it was only in Bomull.

I would *love* to make a greatcoat! Please post pics when you've finished! :D There's an old power-free Singer knocking about in my family somewhere. I might have to claim it if no one else wants it. Hmm...

Thank you for your fab advice redskies. I need to learn to take my time :D

Upgrading the first-Aid kit as part of the 72 hour bag. Items added this week include:- extra foil blankets, extra hand warmers, steri-strips, anti-histamines and considering a C.A.T tourniquet, you know, in case of a nasty car accident?

I'm *so* useless at sewing ... my domestic science teacher at school hit me and told me I was depraved    never really got on with it since  I'm thinking of making curtains out of the fabric I've picked up on my travels over the years tho, so I'd better get over it ...

As to preps, I've done very little. Made a few lists here, to clear my head for planning. Bought a 1.5 litre kilner jar, and some Q tips for the medical prep. Tried to buy some plastic storage crates from Tatco for under the bed, but they got the order wrong. And got the big pieces of material out of my stash to think about HM curtains ...

Ref the sewing machine that can do 12 layers of jeans - stating the obvious, but please be careful while using it.

My girlfriend was sewing the other day and got a needle thru the finger - Fortunately I was there, so could unscrew the needle and use plyers to pull the needle out - needed a lot of force to shift it. Ouch.

Safe sewing :)

Cheers

 ouch!

I have an electric machine, just starting some quilting with it but have done smaller things. I am looking out for a singer treadle :D
