A question for the ladies...

Post by preppingsu »

As I've got older I've noticed that my joints are aching more ( too many years running and power walking probably worn them down).
Do any of you take regular supplements to help with the 'ageing process'? And if so what would you recommend.
Thanks.

As women get older, and particularly around the time of and after the menopause, they lose bone density. This can cause problems. One of the best ways to address it is to do a little weight lifting. This can help improve the situation. I'm not for a minute suggesting you aim for an Arnie type physique, just some gentle toning!

I've got a dodgy hip and very dodgy shoulders. I'm getting an xray to confirm osteo arthritis in the hip this week, and I suspect it's in my shoulders too. I'm young for it, but it does happen. I did try glucosamine and omega supplements, but the glucosamine disagreed with me, even though it did seem to help the joint. The other one I've heard mentioned is evening primrose oil capsules. A male aquaintance swears by them for his back. I've also noticed that walking a mile or two a day helps too. I'm draggin my arse by the end of it, and the hip is quite painful, but it's easier the next day.

Aches and pains are, I'm afraid, part of getting older. I'm determined that mine won't stop me doing anything I want to do. If it's arthritis, then all you can do is learn to live with it until such times as you're deemed ready for joint replacement. If it's old age, well, ditto really, without the replacement. Hot baths and epsom salts will help relieve the symptoms, but there's no cure for aging!

and increase vit D and calcium intakes. go back to full fat milk.

some research on glucosmaine helping fix the joint tissues from years of use (and abuse)

and many people find omega oild - not only good for the brain - working on joints too.

primrose oil supposed to be good for menopausal issues too...allegedly

Thanks for the link, looks helpful :)

I wouldn't touch anything but blue top milk if you paid me! Green and red are evil, nasty things :P And we still have access to blue top milk that gets cream on top. Haven't seen that in the supermarkets for years. I'm not generally in favour of half fat, skimmed, semi skimmed; if you lead an active life, you need proper nutrition. And children, especially, don't tend to do well on half fat 'proper' food, not if they're eating a proper diet.

I plan to find an omega supplement next time I'm in town - it's an over fifty mile round trip for us, so I don't go very often. I eat tuna though, and fresh salmon when we can get it.

I take vit D, 1000mg daily, plus vit C, same amount, through the winter. The vit D is year round, but particularly in the winter, since we get so little daylight in the middle of the season. I find it helps my energy levels, as well as my mood. I'm wondering now if stopping the vit D would have an effect on the hip. Hmm.

Oil of evening primrose has long been used for menopause symptoms. The other one that might be useful there is agnus castus, although I'd advise research as it's not as simple as just taking the capsule.

Thank guys, very helpful info.

Vit D has a lot to answer for I think. Last summer and this winter has been terrible and I haven't been out as much as normal, plus job taking up extra time.

Evening primrose oil - I've heard thats good - start taking it and I'll get a head start on the big M!!

'Fraid I'm not a milk drinker but I do eat lots of good quality mature cheese. Don't eat enough fish either...

Lol, it's ok, got to go tomorrow, get that xray to confirm - or otherwise - the OA. I do a lot of buying online for things we can't get here, but I do try to put as much cash as possible back into the local economy, which means buying as much as possible here.

I've had depression on and off for years. I don't do meds though; I'm a right stubborn bugger. I'd worked out my own personalised CBT before it became a standard, and use that, if it gets really bad, I head for counselling, despite the best efforts of every doctor to throw pills at me. The only time I did have meds, when I went back to see about coming off them, the doc told me I'd be on them 'for the foreseeable future, probably the rest of my life'. He got treated to a withering glare and I sorted it out myself! The vit D helps very much with the winter aspect of depression, and I've found, as I said, that it helps my energy and my mood.

I'm off out now - looking for pebbles and lumps of quartz to do various things with to sell in the shop. I'll be bundling up in waterproofs though, and the two youngest, who are coming with me, will be too; there's sporadic sideways rain out there, as well as a very stiff breeze. We're due gales in the next couple of days, so the sea, even in the wee bay, will be rough, with lots of spray.

yeah depression is a bugger isnt it. forgive me, im going to sit on the fence with discussions of treatment...as its my job

fully agree with sorting ourselves out from the middle outwards and using whats around us and within us to rebuild and repair.

so very well done for staying strong and i would HATE to be your GP. :D

i bet that spray and sound of those waves is damn good though????

i dont believe in having regrets - but moving from the coast may be one of mine...
