Ok so this is what I am prepping for at the moment and why I believe it is necessary from my point of view.

EMP from a solar flare or high attitude detonation of a nuclear device 250 miles above the earth.

The Sun is about to cross into the Solar Maximum, during this period the Sun can start to burp huge amounts of energy into space, since 1890 we have been documenting the solar maximums and they appear to be about 4 years after the start of the solar cycle...the solar cycle we are in now started in Dec 2008...so early 2013 is the due date...since 1890 the longest period has been 4.5 years...so at the most we can expect it to last until May 2013.....The last big burp that affected us was the Carrington event in 1859 that EMP pretty much took out the only electrical communication system we had...the Telegraph...the EMP was so extreme it caused fires and burned wires in two..in a few cases the telegraph systems that weren't damaged started to send signals even though they weren't plugged in !!!

Imagine what would happen now !!!....No GPS, No TV, No Mobiles, No Internet - most devices that are powered would be fried...even your car...No Engine Management (EMU).

With 90% of civil communications being down and most infrastructures compromised it would be time to leave the cities and towns...I plan to have a spare EMU in a protected faraday cage and when the SHTF....Swap it....load up and get the hell out of Dodge......if that doesn't work then it is a 12 day hike to the BOL.

As for the high Attitude Nuclear Device detonation...it could have the same effect if big enough....Google Starfish Prime....that device was only 1.4 MT and caused the power grid to fail 600 miles away !!

I see it a different way. If the sun gives off another massive CME that can have a detrimental effect on the weather (such as making the snows come really heavily when they did come) then a serous weather event could marginally affect the economy and society a for a period of time.
