I've often said that in a worst-case scenario, I'd shelter at home/bug in. But I've got thinking - what about fire? No fire brigade or service is going to be around if I have a mishap, especially as I'll be using flames indoors, the risk is higher.
Anyone got ideas for a system to put out fires at home? An extinguisher in every room?
Or could I even make my own sprinkler system if I get jiggy with some hosepipes!
I've an extinguisher and fire blanket in the kitchen and am sourcing the same for upstairs. Also looking into getting the airing cupboard door changed for a fire rated version - the combi boiler is in there. I'm also looking at collapsable 1st floor escape ladders - scary looking, but better than the alternative.
I read a thread on here pre Xmas about knowing how to exit any building you're in, which got me thinking fire risk.
Not really thought about the consequences of fire in a SHTF scenario, but your point is a good one. I plan to bug-in (for various reasons) and agree that fire should be considered a real risk, whether self- inflicted (candles, burners etc.), or otherwise.
I'll watch this thread with interest, but I guess the starting point would be a re-evaluation of potential causes and an action-plan to suit. Not sure how I'd retro fit a sprinkler system into the home, not without significant cosmetic compromise and an 'interesting chat' with the OH!
if you were to go down the hose pipe route , You`d need to drill tiny holes in it . about 1.5 /2mm should do it with the open end blocked off .
how many rroms are you thining of fitting your sprinkler system in , if its just one, then taking it off the outdoor tap will do it . if its more than one room then you need to think about colour coding your pipes and also a multi tap . these fit onto your outdoor tap and turn it into a 4 branch allowing you to do this in 4 rooms .
YES i walked away mid sentence , you were boring me to death and my survival instincts kick in .

holy smokes thats good.
i was going with the others- get detection, prevention and fighting euipment (ooh sounds professional) but now i wanna rig up dry risers and everything cool.
...but really all i have is alarms and extinguishers, and an escape plan too
Interesting reading, thanks. I'm not sure the wife would be happy with hosepipes throughout the house - but maybe something could be constructed post-SHTF (she may be a bit more understanding at that point!).
In a SHTF scenario, my assumption is mains water will be out of action. So I guess you'd have to rig whatever system to a sizeable (to be fit for purpose) water storage container, then figure a way to generate a high enough pressure. Not being an expert in this stuff, I reckon this one has 'tricky' written all over it
Edit: And water + electric is a combo to think twice about.
